After reading the reviews from others, I realized that this spinner was built badly out of balance. I taped some pennies to the inside of some of the blades, and finally got it balanced. No difference. I re-checked the tightness of the nuts on the spinners - everything moved well. Spinning the blades by hand showed that they moved freely. I made sure the pole was perfectly straight up and down and watched the blades barely moving as our other spinners spun rapidly in the wind.
Then I recognized that the blades were not tilted at all, as were all my other spinners. There was simply nothing to catch the wind and help this to spin. Unfortunately, I had already recycled the box by then (silly me), so I am stuck with this overpriced static sculpture.
My advice is to avoid this poorly designed and constructed item. There are much better ones for less money, and they actually spin.
The big problem with mine (and the reason I'm taking off 1 star) is that one of the spinners in particular was not at all balanced and the heavy side would always be at the bottom. I bent some of the stems of the leaves to space out the petals better and put some magnets and washers on the lighter side at the top and tried to get it balanced so that it wouldn't settle with a heavy side. It takes a lot of trial and error and it's not perfect, but it does spin in a mild breeze now (a breeze that moves leaves isn't enough; it takes a breeze that moves branches). The bottom of the stake has an outrigger that looks like you should step on it to force both tines into the ground, but the outrigger is just held there with a blob of solder, so I wouldn't push too hard on that cross-piece (see picture). It is very important to get the stake plumb. Use a level and check in two directions to make sure it is plumb. If it is not plumb, it may not rotate correctly as the wind direction changes, and it could also cause problems with spinning. Even so, I haven't noticed mine turning to face the wind even though it seems to move easily when I push it. The instructions could be a lot better than they are, though assembly is pretty easy. A wrench is included, but hand tightening might be better in this case.
This spinner is not quite as nice as the much more expensive ones I saw at the store originally, but it is pretty close and I am happy with the purchase.
>> Now that I've had this for a while I'm going to DOUBLY recommend it! Be sure you don't try to tighten the wheels too close... I live in Southern California where there is not much wind and this thing still twirls. Even with only a slight breeze it goes around slowly. I love it and have placed it where I can see it from my couch. It's so beautiful and calming. What a small price to pay for something that makes me so happy (I'm a person who doesn't usually buy gifts for myself, so to get this and have it work so well makes it extra special.)
