My initial goal with this device was to provide a gateway from a DAC out of a Nexus 7 tablet into the amps in my car without just splicing stuff together, with an additional bonus of having a manual volume control and manual equalizer knobs. The fine tuning is fantastic, with no fuzz or popping. Volume control is linear and smooth, the feel of the knobs is great, with just the right amount of resistance. What I didn't expect was the radical improvement of sound in general from the fairly nice Sony head unit that existed in the car before this. The subwoofer output is delightfully warm with the right adjustments, and the signal to the other outputs is wonderfully clean, even during adjustments. I am surprised at the quality of the unit given the price, as I've paid more for less before.
What would I improve? It'd be nice if I could change the color of the lights. That's my biggest one. Really. That's it.
Update: I ended up getting a new head unit, and I still used this eq because it boosted the signal from 4v to 7v, and I used the sub output of the eq because of the higher signal strength. The filter may be limited to 60 or 90hz on the sub output, but I found that the rolloff is a slope and I could still get decent output of 90hz to 120hz from my subwoofer.
This separates the frequency's flawlessly. you want a good eq under 100 bucks. This is the one for you!
Its small enough to hide in the glovebox or center console unless you have a eq slot in your dash or know how to do a custom one like i did for my mustang. regardless its a must have for any stereo.
my minus 1 star is there is No dimmer for the lighting on the unit... Its bright as *(&^ at night.
I installed my system about a month ago, but could never get the sound just right. I was constantly tweaking the gain/high and low filter setting on my power amps. What would sound really good for some tracks would make others kind of muddy. THe head unit itself has an equalizer, but it's very limited and kind of hard to navigate to.
This equalizer really cleans up the sound. I can now listen to some older classic rock, some classical music, or some heavy hitting pop. The sound is excellent. It takes a little while to retrain yourself not to use the head unit's volume control, and use the Clarion's, but it becomes second nature after awhile. And while others have said the knobs are small, which indeed they are, it's far from not useable.
I was able to cut a nice slot in my Dakota's dash with a dremel tool for the unit. It looks sharp and sounds terrific.
For the price you can't beat it at all.
