Sherry always knew there was something out there. She's eighteen, works for a tabloid newspaper in Chicago and has a brother, Danny who is a lazy mooch. They live a pretty normal dull life with hippie parents and a normal existence. Then the moon disappears and people start to go missing only to reappear later, but different. Sherry has an abusive ex-boyfriend who shows up and claims to be one of these beings that have been showing up around the world. He's no longer the same person in that body. He tells her he has come to protect her and her brother and takes her underground, against her will to save her, where they meet others like them. She begins to unravel the truth about Merrick, about what he's really doing here, about the way he looks at her, about the crazy dangerous world they live in. Can he convince her that he's here to help? Will she like what she finds when she opens up to the truth? Will he be the one to love her when everyone else has failed? Will he be able to protect her?

Sherry's 18, she's her brother's chaffeur and she's trying to escape from her abusive, pushy, ex-boyfriend Matt. One day, she looks up and sees that the moon is gone. No one knows why. All people know is that their friends and family are dying and are coming back as people with black hair and eyes, not seeming to remember them at all. When she comes home one day she sees Matt hanging around her apartment. Of course, she tries he to get rid of him, only to be drugged and taken with her brother underground where they meet other people and their keepers. Her kidnapper is claiming that he's not Matt and that he's actually Merrick, her brother's (who's called a special) keeper or protector. It only gets insanely worse when people are dying and coming back as lighters, the people with black hair and eyes that want to take over Earth. To make it worse lighters are telling people that the keepers are bad and causing all of the problems. So now, with the public hating keepers, and the lighters attacking keepers and the specials, Sherry, Danny, and Merric are in for a tough time.

I really liked this book, it had a great idea and concept and it had that kind of end of the world thing going on. I really like Sherry and her sweet innocent selfless character and Merricks protectiveness and kindness to Sherry and Danny. I'm excited to see how the series ends! 5 stars! I think you should definitley buy this book.

If you are easily distracted by poor grammar and run-on sentences, I would have to advise you to pass this one by. I have only made it through two chapters and I am struggling to focus on the reason why I chose to purchase this story. It is a very interesting premise that Crane presents, but when I have to re-read a six line sentence three times to understand what she trying to convey, I lose my appetite to continue. Perhaps I will pick it up again someday, when I am not itching for a red pen. It is disappointing to see such poor quality in something that is "published." Perhaps my standards are just too high, but the mistakes that I noted would earn a barely passing grade if turned in as a graded assignment.

The unique story, for me, lost out to the poor technical execution of the effort.

This book drew me in with pretty well developed characters and an original story line. Unfortunately, as a teacher I can't in good conscience suggest that anyone purchase this book, especially for adolescent readers. The syntax and grammar were the worst I have ever seen in a "published" book. Homophones, improper tense, inappropriate word use. There were places in the book that made me think of that old spell checker rhyme that was riddled with errors. For as often as I was enjoying the characters and plotline, I was shaking my head in disbelief that I hadn't given up on the book because of easily edited errors. (For those of you who tally print errors in your head like me- I stopped counting at 20)

Overall, I think the promise of creativity and ability of the author to produce a great YA book is clearly there... Just in desperate need of an editor.

This book has a weak lead female who is constantly having minor drama issues. The plot line is boring and stretched out with alot of the same thing happening over and over again (let's hide underground, a little kissing, hide another day, cook a bit, find some more people like us, hide another day, etc). Even the action points never really climax- no injury is ever really severe, no danger every really dangerous, and even the new power developements are left to stagnate. No one does anything but sit in a hole all day. I hate not finishing books and I will say that I struggled to stay awake to finish this book. Even the ending was boring. Oh great, found more people like us. Not worth the effort.

I really don't understand how Collide received so many 5-star ratings. It has a lot of potential story-wise, but quality-wise, it is just AWFUL. How can the author get away without editing this thing?! The grammar is terrible, there are a bunch of type-o's and the sentence structure is atrocious. The story has so many plot loop-holes it's embarrassing. Nothing is thoroughly explained ("Oh my parents left us"... such an easy way to get rid of them in the story) and things that just don't make sense (like Matt's older sister being Sherry's good friend in grade school... earlier in the book, Sherry mentions that Matt is approximately FIVE years older than her, so how can she have gone to school with his OLDER sister?! Was Sherry hanging out with 13+ year olds when she was 7 years old in grade school..?) Also, the girl's 19- unless she graduated when she was like 15 or 16, which there is no mention of, then how can she have possibly already gone through college?? It's just not believable.

The characters are too flat, and frankly, Sherry seems to be a Bella Twilight rip-off: all she does is complain about how plain and boring she is, when everyone else thinks she's SO gorgeous and obsessed with her. Yes we had that in Twilight and again in Shades of Grey. Enough is enough- can we get some confident female leads for once? Plus, the concept that Merrick comes back in her abusive ex-boyfriend's body is just pathetic, not to mention incredibly degrading that the author would make the man she falls in love with be in the body of an abusive guy who wants to hit/rape her... if that's supposed to be irony, it's not working.

I read a LOT, and there is nothing more that irks me than a poorly written book. Really, this has potential- it's just so awfully written that I can't bring myself to continue. The author needs to 1. EDIT EDIT EDIT, 2. Give the characters more depth and suspense (they are so predictable) and 3. Close up the many plot holes in the story- it seems that she was just lazy and just hastily brushed over a lot of important details (like the moon disappearing or her parents leaving) when they should have been more captivating and better elaborated.

Don't waste your money on this one... I'd only give it a shot if it was free.
