This story reminded me of "Speed" only instad of a bus that cant slow down or it'll blow it's Statham's body that cant slow down or he'll die due to some nasty chemicals injected by some baddies. I like all of Stratham's movies, I know what I'm going to get and he always delivers. Recommended.

This, along with "The Transporter" is my favorite Jason Statham movie and just a great showcase for Jason to show off his action---and his comedy---chops!

The plot is actually similar to the noir classic "D.O.A." Statham, as Chev Chelios, a super-bad hit man for an LA drug operation, is targeted for elimination by his own boss after a botched hit. Verona, a punk and enemy of Chev is dispatched to knock out Chev and dose him with a slow acting poison that will kill Chev within 24 unless he keeps his adrenaline level as high as possible. This premise turns the resulting movie and revenge quest into a live-action video game that every adrenaline junkie should love!!

Once Chev learns of Verona's treachery via a "gay James Bond tape" death-message DVD that Verona leaves for him, Chev pursues Verona through the LA criminal underground and Chev is hell-bent for revenge. It's 90 minutes of every type of inappropriate behavior that you can name---violence, property destruction, and of course, "sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll!!" Crank gives you more action than you can handle with a drive away escape through a shopping mall, hitting up a hospital for more adrenaline, making love in Chinatown before an admiring crowd of Chinese high school girls (who describe Chev to t.v. reporters as "so cute! Magnum-sized!!), all the while slowly eliminating the criminal "small fish" and heading towards a final confrontation with Verona and Chev's traitorous former boss---which unfolds in a helicopter finale over downtown LA that's just incredible.

I have often called "Crank" the perfect adult live-action cartoon for the American male. Though it's violent, the action is so stylized and is so frequently off-set by Chev's wise cracks and interplay with the supporting cast, that it never comes across as gory or just gratuitous. And the supporting cast are what really make this film. Here's Jason as the macho hit man, but he's backed up by his gay Hispanic "gal Friday" Kaylo; beautiful dumb-blonde heart-of-gold girl friend Eve; loyal black gang leader Orlando; and of course Doc Miles, Chev's MD lifeline as he tries to battle the poison. Kudos to all the supporting cast, their performances are what really elevate "Crank" from a routine action thriller to a maniacal action-comedy classic!!

If you haven't see a Statham movie, or if you're loving for an action picture that's also a comdey and a cut above the normal genre fare, by all means give Crank a view!!

this is definitely guy's night movie. group of friends, case or two of beer and even the guys with 3 second attention spans won't be bored. very much a statham brand action film. the movie is shot in a way that has you experience what statham's character is going through. there's some cheesiness but this movie ain't half bad. plus Dwight Yoakam is pretty good too. The chase in the yellow vw rabbit, well, there's a part of every guy that wants to do that...

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas A great moment in post-modernist cinema 9 de diciembre de 2010

(Warning: mild spoilers, but none of this should come as any surprise.)

It's not every day you have fans of low-brow, almost grindhouse action movies and esoteric art geeks both sitting together and enjoying the same movie. I would argue that not only is this movie an insanely over-the-top ultraviolent romp, it's a brilliant addition to post-modernist cinema.

Within the first three minutes of the movie, the plot violently shifts into 5th gear. Our hero Chev Chelios (Jason Statham with a psychotic and desperate look in his eyes) quickly learns he must keep his adrenaline up to prevent the poison in his system from stopping his heart. This leads to one set piece after another of increasing absurdity-- snorting lines of coke off the floor of a public toilet, driving a car up an escalator, and violent headbanging to "Achy Breaky Heart" to name a few. And that's just the first twenty minutes!

The fact the movie manages to stay in overdrive literally all the way to the last shot (It's no spoiler alert to tell you he dies, as the blurb on the sequel says "He died, but he got better".) is a testament to the many good qualities about this movie, such as consistent and effective pacing, Statham's commanding screen presence, and the delightfully twisted imagination the film-makers bring to Chev's increasingly implausible choices of action to stay alive.

This is where the post-modernist touches come in. Past a certain point in the movie (around half-way in), the suspension of disbelief is pushed to such a tenuous point that we start to wonder if the director is poking fun at the Hollywood stereotype of the invincible hero. Let's face it: If we're watching Jason Statham standing on a motorcycle moving at 60+ mph in a hospital gown while he has a massive adrenaline-shot-induced erection, all while Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin" is blasting on the soundtrack, the director must be laughing.

All these increasingly surreal set pieces are balanced rather well by Statham's ability to act the part. Moreso than even "Snatch", I'd hold up this movie as evidence that Statham is well-suited to take over as successor to Michael Caine's original British badass.

On a side note, Amy Smart holds her own remarkably well as the ordinary girlfriend who chose the wrong guy, and learns to adapt as the madness escalates. She carries pretty much all the character development there is to be seen in both this movie and the sequel.

The only reason why I haven't given this a perfect review is because this movie is certainly not for everyone. The testosterone which saturates this movie through and through will likely prove too much or perhaps too juvenile for most female viewers. Boys, unless your date is a film geek, or has Statham fantasies, I'd recommend choosing another date movie.
4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas plenty good enough for what it is meant to deliver, just not quite 5 stars 15 de junio de 2011

"Crank" with Jason Statham and Amy Smart is a film of action and decent FX where most of the main characters get killed. That said, Amy Smart is very attractive, and who knows if that was a stand in when we got to see some of her anatomy, but the glimpse albeit a short one added to the overall viewing of the DVD release. Of course you will need to forget what is possible and what is not possible as far as surviving horrific drugs, car chases, and gunplay, but that is what you expect when you sit down for this ride. Basically a hit man for the underworld gets revenge and then some, and has a lovely young blonde girlfriend who is willing to have sex in public in Chinatown. Obviously there is a sequel, "Crank 2, High Voltage." Rating the first release for delivering what it promised, I'll give it 4 stars. Dwight Yoakam stars as "Doc" and Valarie Rae Miller would have made my day if she was among the gratuitous eye candy that shared their assets. In the hoodlum's lair there were a few ladies who were open minded with their upper goodies, and this too seemed appropriate to this film. Other than that, I guess I'd have to say this is the genre of opportunity that Jason Statham was meant to star in. IMHO not quite as good as "Scarface" with Al Pacino, but that's sort of like saying a Chevrolet isn't a Ferrari.
