1. Beast of Fire
2. Infinite Descension
3. The Wilderness Beyond

How About Venom? 29 de agosto de 2011
Por Scott Rosenbluth - Publicado en
Formato: CD de audio
The retro trend of many bands today was at first something of an odd cyclical coincidence. It's the old, "in twenty years this will be popular again" schtick. What's interesting about this crop of new talent is that while they are passionately following the footsteps of giants, they have enough savvy to mix and mold, to experiment and push a sound in different directions. If you liked Mercyful Fate, but wished they were faster and heavier, then Portrait is for you. It's still NWOBHM, with that classic Fate sound, many less oddball time changes and falsetto singing, but it's darkness and melody hearken back to a day when heavy meant a completely different thing. The songs are long and epic, with full ranges of vocals in each one but the speed is much more Hellhammer or Venom. The recording is smooth and organic, the sound of a real band plugging in and playing, which adds to this vintage broth. The riffs are classic, stuff you've heard but arranged well and full of vintage 80's guitar acrobatics. Not the Van Halen stuff, but the Dio or Black Sabbath stuff, just faster. This is very interesting music and I continue to listen to it, and find new stuff to like each time. Viva 1984!!!

Crimen Laesae Majestatis Divinae is the second album from Swedish traditional heavy metal revivalists Portrait, and the first to feature new vocalist Per Karlsson (who also fronts Overdrive). With their more evil sound and occult-themed lyrics, Portrait is a darker alternative to bands like Wolf, White Wizzard and Enforcer, one that takes its cues more from King Diamond and Mercyful Fate than Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.

If you're into this kind of music, Portrait is the kind of band you have to love. They execute their twin lead guitar sound brilliantly, thrashing away when called for, serving up some absolutely mesmerizing solos, and keeping things melodic (they're a Swedish band after all) throughout. The driving rhythms and wicked guitar work is accentuated perfectly by Portrait's new singer. Karlsson's vocals aren't as much of a dead-on King Diamond impression as Phillip Svenefelt's, but he brings more power and depth to the band's sound while still delivering an impressive falsetto. Obviously Mercyful Fate and King Diamond serve as the template for Portrait's sound, but there is also an old school NWOBHM vibe on Crimen Laesae Majestatis Divinae that brings to mind some of that movement's more sinister bands like Angel Witch, Cloven Hoof and Holocaust. You hear that more so on the faster, heavier songs like "Bloodbath" and "The Passion," whereas the more epic tracks like "Darkness Forever" and "Der Todesking" are straight-up Mercyful Fate worship. Another noteworthy improvement is that the overall production - while still maintaining an old school vibe - is dramatically better than the debut.

Given the increase in popularity of traditionally-inclined heavy metal bands, it's not surprising that a wave of darker bands has emerged. If you're a fan of classic sounding, evil natured heavy metal along the lines of Ghost, Satan's Host and In Solitude, plus of course the originals King Diamond, Mercyful Fate and Angel Witch, you'll absolutely want to check out what Portrait has to offer. Crimen Laesae Majestatis Divinae is one of the strongest traditional metal albums from last year, and given the sheer volume of high quality traditional metal albums released in 2011 that's saying something.

Wow. What a CD. What's with this wave of Mercyful Fate-styled retro metal bands? I'd only recently listened to IN SOLITUDE's excellent "The World. The Flesh. The Devil." when I found this one. Heavy, catchy songs, with blistering guitar solos (seriously, check out this guitar duo and you'll be blown away) and a singer with great, thoroughly METAL pipes! The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is because of the sometimes overlong songs, that, albeit well structured and totally enjoyable, would be better off with a couple of minutes less playing time. Standout tracks: Beast of Fire, Infinite Descension (99% Fate), Bloodbath & Darkness Forever.

of Mercyful Fate. In what may be my most boring review ever, there's not alot more for me to add to what has already been posted about this band by others. What they do they do very very well & the production is quite good on this album. I hope that they can discover themselves as songwriters/ musicians & graduate onto something bigger. The band clearly has loads of talent & I love they are wearing their influences on their sleeves. If you love rip roaring guitars & that darker sound likely you will enjoy this album too.

I really like this release from Portrait. Yes, they draw heavily on Mercyful Fate, but the songwriting is strong and the singer varies things up enough to keep it interesting. Love the twin guitar lines. Production has a thin, old-school vibe that is in keeping with the MF influence. That is something that can be improved next time around.
