The majority of corporate jacket/cover illustrations created for todays publications are criminally, insanely, bland, boring, and unimaginative. I made one of my greatest literary discoveries in 1984; choosing to purchase Lyonesse, by Jack Vance, on the strength of the cover alone. Now I find, to my utter delight, that Spatterlight have produced covers worthy of these Jack Vance, VIE editions - bravo!

This is Vance's final Cugel book, and it is greatness in textual format. Vance is writing at his peak here. The prose is lush but not purple. Vance's writing is economical, and he chooses just the right word or combination to evoke the mood he wants. And this book is nothing if not full of differing moods. Te setting is, once again, the Dying Earth, but this time around, Cugel takes a different route so we see more strange vistas.

The humor in this book is head and shoulders above Vance's other work, even though much of his stuff makes me laugh aloud at times. This one had me laughing much more. Vance was a genius. As I said above, the settings are all excellent, Vance's names are perfect as always, and the adventures are non-stop. I will keep this short and say if you liked any of Vance's work at all, I recommend this one to you as well. I would, however, also recommend to start with the books called "The Dying Earth" aka "Mazirian the Magician" ( the latter title for Kindle) which is perhaps optional, as its tone and characters are vastly different, and "Eyes of the Overworld" also known as Cugel the Clever (latter titled for the Kindle) which is essential IMO. You will have fun every page you read with this one.

I first read Cugel's Saga soon after it was published and was thrown right back to the Dying Earth which I had read back in the early 70s. I love Jack Vance's rich and playful language, his whimsical characters and his ability to develop truly extraordinary tales. As good today as it was then.

Cugel is clever sometimes, but just as often his enemies are cleverer. He is also selfish, venal, arrogant and lazy, and so are his enemies. On a planet facing its last days under a flickering sun how idealistic would people be? Half the fun is never knowing which little battles will finish with Cugel poor, beaten and humiliated and which will leave his opponents in that state and Cugel waltzing off with the cash/treasure/girl. I think I know some people like this.
