Descripción del producto

Descripción del producto

Linda Berdoll's first novel, Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife, a sequel to Jane Austen's beloved Pride & Prejudice, was published in 2004. It and her follow-up, Darcy & Elizabeth (2006) have sold well over 300,000 copies, making them the best-selling Jane Austen sequels to date. "The Darcys: The Ruling Passion" is the third in this series. Reader beware: The faint of heart better hang onto your bonnets, for your sensibilities are in for a bumpy (and racy) ride.

The thing I like about these books is that Berdoll seems to capture the essence of these characters and the dialogue is pretty faithful to the era. Also the trajectory she created for each character is pretty true to the origin of Austen's characters (it's fun to see the inner workings of Lady Anne's mind and who Kitty marries etc). I can't say for sure if all the facts about the time period are true (politics, rituals etc) but she seems to know what she's talking about there. It's just that by book three there's not much left to do. It's fun to see what happened to the Darcy's after the wedding day but even that story has an end (that should have come long before now, like maybe after the first sequel). Also the sex scenes are so gratuitous and the detail is just not necessary. It cheapens the whole thing. I was bored stiff by the middle of the book and had to put it down. But perhaps my main beef with book 3 is that there are typos EVERYWHERE. They're all over the book. Maybe there was no editor this time around? Or maybe the editor got bored before I did and stopped checking? Berdoll is a talented writer to be sure but there was just no need for this book and there's no need for you to buy it.

I love when a story comes to a good ending. Book 3 of Linda Berdoll's variations continues the amorous love between Darcy and Elizabeth. Many times their love is tested by family, friends, and others who want what's not theirs. Caroline and Wickham finally get their just rewards as well as Juliette, the courtesan he frequently visited before he met Elizabeth at the Meryton Assembly. She tries every trick in her bag of arts and allurements to snare Darcy from Elizabeth. In the end our hero stays true to the country lady with the fine eyes. Repartee throughout the three books makes the series fun to read. If sex scenes are not you cup of tea, avoid these books.

Nothing comes close to the first book, Darcy Takes A Wife). Book 2 (Darcy & Elizabeth) was still enjoyable but more of the same, however still a fun read.

Now THIS BOOK: Take the first two, mix them around changing the predicaments each are in. Then mash them all together, to a point of absolute distraction. Add bouncing all over the place (chronologically) with fitting in too much for too many characters & the amount of information for many side "players" is almost reaching a point of "enough already"! Plus way too much and too many coincidences of how characters end up together spanning an entire country & the class level they live in and/or from! Really?

MAJOR PET PEEVE: Editors, throughout the book (worst in the last 20%), either fell asleep or stopped doing there job - typos all over the place (he for her, double commas, etc.).

For me, notwithstanding the above, books 2 & 3 were an easy read just to escape in and continue to read more of the main characters that I love & now will miss.

3.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Second book in a gritty saga... 13 de abril de 2014

This book is the continuation to Ms. Berdoll's "Mr. Darcy Takes A Wife." Both are long, complex works that must have required a lot of research to get all the historical references right. From grave robbing, to the changing political climate, to war... Much more backdrop than we regularly see in these P&P spin-offs and much grittier. Don't read this one first... Although the author makes reference to the earlier work, it isn't enough to help you get the full context and you won't get the nuances. I fancy myself as having a strong vocabulary but the obscure adjectives and adverbs in the work can be off-putting. At least you can use the dictionary feature on Kindle! I think the author has a well-used thesaurus since I refuse to believe that she uses these words on a regular basis! While well-written, it came off as pretentious and contrived. And so we get to some minor spoiling... I am not naive enough to not know that men in those days frequented brothels and dallied with maids, but to make Darcy's former lover (a courtesan that he saw exclusively though not his mistress since she lived in a brothel and serviced other men with his permission when he wasn't in town) a central character abused my romantic notions. I think Darcy would more likely set up a mistress in an out of the way place to avoid detection and to appease his fastidious nature. I don't see him maintaining social obligations to her and her rich husband after she married and moved to Derbyshire. That Bingley near bankrupted himself was believable. Another Darcy child dying seemed unnecessary. As with the first book, there were just too many subplots and the switching back and forth between stories was tiresome. A less complicated story and a more natural vocabulary could have gotten another half a star.

We read the earlier books out loud together and enjoyed them immensely!! This is a fitting continuation of the saga of the Darcy's marriage, although it will likely outrage Jane Austen "purists".

If you enjoyed Pride and Prejudice, and always kind of wondered what happened AFTER the final scene of the happy couples leaving their joint wedding, this is the book for you. A bit sexy, but never gross.....a bit violent, but not more than the times in which the story is written.

The author keeps your attention and makes you want to come back for more......a great read, if not great literature.
