That said, there is one MAJOR flaw in the design. The short USB3 cable can be unplugged from the drive, and it is very loose where it attaches to drive itself. Because of the direction of the cables tension, it puts stress on this connection and causes it to get looser and looser over time. After a few months I got to the point where now, any time I plug it in, a slight bump of the drive or the table it is resting on will cause it to wiggle loose enough to lose connection with the drive. Of course, this is akin to unplugging the drive from your computer with out properly ejecting it first, and puts your data at risk every time it happens (which is often).
In the end, you're left with a rugged drive that can take a beating, but can lose your data with the slightest bump or nudge to the surface it's resting on. It's not even usable on plane rides anymore (the primary purpose I purchased it for) because the vibration of the plane alone will shake the the cable loose of the drive, causing an improper ejection from the computer and sometimes corrupting the data.
I am a scientist and have to keep backups of my data regularly, and the hard drive that I am provided with at work looks and feels very fragile, to say the least. I bought this almost two years ago on recommendation from a friend to use as a backup to my current work hard drive, and have had zero problems. I have ended up using this as my primary external as it is very easy to use and has a number of wonderful features.
What I like the most is that the cord attaches to the hard drive itself, making it difficult to misplace and allowing for ease of transport. I can throw this in the pocket of my backpack and not worry about it. If you are looking for a durable hard drive and don't want to spend a ton of money on an SSD, this is it.
As an amazon customer I constantly find myself reading the most critical reviews, and always wish that some other reviewer who liked the product would address those exact concerns, so I'd like to do that here. The main problem I can see in the critical reviews is that the cord can be faulty. I didn't experience any of the problems that the other reviewers have mentioned. This company has wonderful business practices, and I have seen them respond directly to these reviews and offer to supply a new hard drive under the warranty. Another issue I've read about is that it spontaneously stopped working. This is true of any brand of hard drive -- none are perfect and hard drives don't always last -- that is the nature of hard drives in general (and why it is smart to keep back ups of your back ups...). However, some brands have higher success than others. Knowing this, I did extensive research on all of the hard drives available on Amazon (and elsewhere) and think this stands up to the best and most expensive.
All things considered, I think this hard drive is a safe bet and would recommend this to anyone looking for a durable, long lasting and easy to transport external hard drive.
Quick background on me - engineering student, technology guy, so I know what I'm dealing with. Also an athlete, so I'm kind of rough on my backpack. I was looking for a hard drive that could take a couple shots and could be dropped without me having a fear of breaking it. When I found this, I thought I had come across the perfect solution.
When I got the hard drive, it looked like the rubber around had been glued on last minute. Not a big deal, because it would still absorb the shock, so I ignored it. However, the connector. Oh, my god, the connector. This is the worst piece of trash I have ever used. First off, the cord it comes with is about 6 inches, so if you move your laptop and the cord shifts, it'll disconnect the hard drive. Second, if you want to store your cable around the drive in that rubber holder, be prepared to only use the cord at that angle. Because again, if you move your laptop, it'll disconnect the hard drive.
I finally bought a six foot USB3.0 cord and thought it solved all of my problems. Then of course, when my leg was shaking under the table (not making contact), the hard drive disconnected. How does that even work? The connection becomes more and more flimsy every time you use it, and I cannot in good conscience allow anyone to spend their money on this. Please do not buy.
changing this to a 1 star. the connector for the cable to the hard drive broke, and I've now lost 800+GB worth of data. Wonderful.
It took longer than 24 hours to transfer just over 1T of files, and would not transfer files over 5gigs. I quick formatted the drive to take off any software and it still transferred slowly (10 hours, still not done)
I bought this to replace a failing WD Passport, but this was way worse than my experience with the passport. I read more reviews and ended up going with TWO WD Elements drives, which were nearly the same price as this ONE drive.
The WD elements drives are SUPER. They transferred all the files in just over 3 hours, (drive was quick-formatted, I don't use their software)
They ran cool, smooth, and so far have been durable. I'll stick with the elements from now on.
