It's important to keep both the Northbridge chip and Southbridge chip cool because data integrity can be lost through heat, thus making normal computing operations take longer and with gaming or intensive data flow, can cause hang ups and stuttering. This cooler is very tall at about 4.5cm or 1 3/4 inches. The base is the standard chipset square size at 3.5cm. These are heavy duty coolers (80.5gm). The little fan is serious but nearly silent as it moves nearly 7 Cubic feet of air per minute. It comes with both a 3 pin small motherboard plug and the larger plug attached- for large 4 pin (two wires) for ease of attachment to an extra power supply lead. You'll most likely need to remove your motherboard to remove the old heat sink, because access is required to the back of the motherboard to pinch the spreading pins together to get the old one out, which is very easy with a pair of tweezers or small pliers or fingernails. Most motherboard chipset cooler attachment point holes are standard distances apart, so compatibility most likely won't be an issue. These come with two metal attachment tabs that insert at the base of the cooler and come with two new attachment spring pins. This package includes a packet of heat sink compound if you're all out of arctic silver.
Motherboards today are trying to accomplish more than they ever have in the past. On a standard ATX motherboard it's crowded, so be sure and check your clearances above and to the sides of where you intend to install this. There are other lower profile coolers available if this simply won't work. In the my computer, I was able to change the CPU heat sink and fan for one that stands up with side mounted fan, and allowed sufficient clearance for attachment to my Northbridge. The Southbridge was crowded above by the plastic cowl on my video card. I simply removed the cowl by removing the screws on the back of the video card that attaches the GPU heat sink. The plastic cowl for the video card was attached to the heat sink via 4 tall screws going down into the heat sink. I removed the old thermal paste with a tissue and applied some fresh and reinstalled the heat sink, minus the plastic cover -Thereby allowing me to install the cooler on the Southbridge. And no, there was no heat dissipation trouble because the cowl is missing from my video card, as I can now monitor the heat by touching the heat sink on the video card. Be aware however that modifying or removing anything on the video card or motherboard would, in most cases, void its warranty. My video card and motherboard are stable, trouble free and I'm pretty sure their past their point of return, so this matters very little to me. By installing these coolers, I'm extending the useful life of the board.

My three year old i7 tower with its still impressive Geforce decided to freak out and shut down due to the Northbridge turning into an oven. I couldn't get my Asus to stay on more than 3 minutes before it would abruptly shut down. When turning it back on, I would get a NB temperature warning, so I knew it was hopeless. I opened it up and saw the results of the bake off: My passive heatsink was resting on the floor of my tower, instead of its designated spot on the MB. Come to think of it, I did hear this clang sound at one point. I ordered this product in hopes that it would solve the problem and eliminate the need to purchase a new motherboard (I'm not THAT technically good). Turns out - it was fairly easy to put in. I just used some 90% isopropyl alcohol to clean the left over goo from the previous thermal paste, applied the included thermal paste, placed the adjustable metal rods with spring anchors into the heatsink's base, and snapped this baby down. Finally, I plugged the fan into a nearby free power cord, waited about 20 minutes, then turned it on. Drum roll .... perfect! The temperature levels are now safe and I got my main computer back (so long for now backup laptop). Oh, and the fan is super quiet.

Just one note: My heat sink popped off on its own from the drastic heat, so popping in this replacement NB cooling fan was a breeze. If you are removing a faulty heatsink/fan that still happens to be in place, you may need to take the entire mother board out,.You see, those two screw like things (I called them anchors), snap down into holes through the motherboard in order to clamp down the fan. Once they snap down, the bottoms expand so there's no way get them back out except by squeezing the bottom end (under the motherboard) to get them through.

Needed to replace stock 10mm passive heatsink on an IBM ServerRaid M5014 (LSI 9260-8i) RAID controller because the original is intended for high-velocity airflow in a 1U or 2U server enclosure; not the quiet low-velocity air cooled case I am using. This item was a "bolt-on" and the geometry of my case allowed plenty of clearance for the unit. If you have the cache battery (BBU) you may need to trim off a row of fins but plenty will remain to permit low-air-velocity cooling - just orient the sliding-arm attachments slots in parallel with the board edge connector. Note that if you use it un-trimmed, the heatsink is not centered over the RAID chip, but this is of zero consequence to performance. The LSI original heatsink is 30mm x 55mm x 10mm with attachment holes in "NE" and "SW" corners on 53.5mm centers - this heatsink has variable mounting capability that incorporates sliding arms that will adapt to many hole patterns. Even with the protruding audio alert device on the RAID controller, this heat sink fit without modifications. I found the push-pins (included) to work just fine. Just be careful, as with any push-pin retained cooler. I used Arctic Silver and did not polish the unit (though it could use a better finish, I guess). Fan is reasonably quiet too!

Bought as a repair part for my buddies Gigabyte chipset heatsink. The stock that was sent didn't have thermal paste applied, or even a silicon chip, so during any graphics intensive programs, even low end games like TF2, it would act fine, ~70 FPS, then every 5 mins it would dip to 5 FPS for at least 20 seconds, making it practically unplayable. Speedfan showed the chipset temp would reach over 90C at these times! replacement was easy, came with clips, and push-in pegs. After replacement, with thermal paste, temps dropped to 17 idle, no more than 25 max.

I purchased this product to cool down my Gigabyte P45T-ES3G North Bridge which is confined and has low air circulation due to the PC case design.
Installation is a snap. This heatsink comes with two small mounting brackets which have push pins on the motherboard's side and special notches that protude to the heatsink's side. This allows the brackets to be mounted in angle and since they run into the heatsink's longitudinal grooves, one can simply adjust this unit to pretty much any configuration, angle and offset on the chipset's die. It doesn't matter if the die is not centered. The cooling efficiency is the same. Managed to cut down my NB temps by 10°C. The motherboard's mounting holes were a bit too big for the heatsink's push pins. So be careful and check how the push pins show on the back of the board. In case you see that the pins are not sitting well on the back, or there is too much "play" on the push pins retainers, or they are sitting diagonaly, get a couple of non-conductive washers with smaller holes to fix this.
The fan is silent and design is convenient, simple and attractive.
Highly recommended for chipset cooling.
