Personally, I find a lot of the rooms to be a little bland, but I like how the photo captions explain exactly what works about the decorator’s choices. Even when I don’t like a room, I can still see what they were going for and learn something from it. And anyway, it could be a fun drinking game to sip every time you see a sheepskin draped over a chair. (Hint: you will be pretty tipsy by the time you reach the last one on page 217.)
This guide is mainly written for the average person working with what they’ve already got; the text is friendly and approachable. The looks are achievable without spending a fortune or hiring a decorator. The advice is largely applicable to renters as well as home-owners. It’s not really the kind of book where you go out and buy everything in the photos, but you could – there’s a shopping guide in the back and sources are meticulously documented.
The page layout feels a little crowded. I would have preferred more full-page photos rather than so many pages with multiple small photos. Photos of full interiors should be large to give a sense of space; small photos are more appropriate for close-up details. The book would also have benefitted from a more minimalist approach to the typography, without so many inconsistencies in borders and backgrounds.
The book’s quality is very nice – good paper, cleanly printed photos and even a pink ribbon bookmark. It would make a beautiful housewarming gift. Also, my cat apparently finds the open book pretty comfy, and I bet yours will too.
Bored and disappointed with this sequel.
