The Marx Brothers are universally considered to be classic Hollywood’s preeminent comedy team and Duck Soup is generally regarded as their quintessential film. A topical satire of dictatorship and government in general, the movie was a critical failure and box-office let-down on its initial release in 1933. J. Hoberman's study of the film traces its reputation history, from the initial disappointment of its release, to its rise to cult status in the 1960s when the Marx’s anarchic, anti-establishment humor seemed again timely. Hoberman places Duck Soup, alongside analogous comedies―Dr. Strangelove (1964), the Beatles films, Morgan! (1966), The President’s Analyst (1967) and The Producers (1968). It attained canonical stature as a touchstone for Woody Allen and would be recognized by the Library of Congress in the 1990s. Hoberman's analysis provides a historical and political context as well as an in-depth production history, drawing on primary sources and emphasizing director McCarey’s prior work along with the Marx Brothers as well as the situation at Paramount, a substantial synopsis, and an account of the movie’s initial reception, concluding with its subsequent elevation to comic masterpiece.

J. Hoberman is a film critic, journalist and author based in New York City, USA. From 1988 to 2012 he was Senior Film Critic for The Village Voice. He is the author of books including Film After Film: (Or, What Became of 21st Century Cinema?) (2012) An Army of Phantoms: American Movies and the Making of the Cold War (2011); The Magic Hour: Film at Fin de Siècle (2003); The Dream Life: Movies, Media, and the Mythology of the Sixties (2003) and 42nd Street in the BFI Film Classics series (1993).

This is a brief study of little more than 100 pages of of one of the most famous and anarchic movies of the legendary Marx Brothers comedy team. Such a classic film deserves a detailed history and this work comes up to the task. It is a sociological analysis of its origins, themes and critique of international relations.
Although brief, it is packed with details ranging from all sorts of trivia (such as the origins of its total) to relevant facts (such as why the film was not as successful as its predecessors).
This film is a classic of the crazy comedy genre. Unlike their other movies, this film eschews conventional plot: there is no romantic subplot and as the film progresses, it becomes more and more ridiculous.
The author illustrates how the film is more than a mockery of international relations: its parody of diplomacy and espionage. is a not-so-subtle critique of autocracy which leads to senseless wars (As the author points out, it was released the year Adolf Hitler came to power). As such both the book and the film will appeal to those who love irreverent social critique.
For fans, many of the details will be familiar but there is still new information, particularly in the analysis of some of its key scenes. The author also speculates on its relevance to contemporary international politics (After all, our world has no shortage of dictators and unnecessary wars). While the original film is a crazy parody, the author locates it within a historical context and illustrates its legacy for our contemporary world.

An interesting and entertaining study of a classic screen comedy.
