Easy-as long as you read the short, clear directions (with pictures). I was using it within 10 minutes of opening the box.
small, which is great for me. I have a 2 bedroom villa style townhome, with tile everywhere but the bedrooms and stairs. This is a great size for me; but if you have a big home, or even a moderate-sized home with a lot of carpet, this may not be the best choice for you.
Easy again. It's light compaired to the big vacuums, but the high end of average for the little vacuums. I like it though, it self-propels easily and turns well. The only thing I don't like is you have to manually unlock the base (or "foot") from the upright position by holding it with your foot while moving the handle back/downwards.
You can't get much easier than this unit when it comes to cleaning it out- you push a button, and the container pops out. The top easily twists off, and you just dump it out. The filter has to be cleaned here and there too. It's just as easy to put it back in (unlike my last vacuum... ugh)
Absolutely. I have 3 cats- that shed allll the time. Chairs and sofas were a constant battle between us and the kitties... but now, we've WON!
the power paw is especially great.
TOTALLY worth the money! As long as you don't have a huge house with wall to wall carpet, you should give this one a try!
UPDATE: OK guys- it's been 5 years, and this thing is still going strong! This is more than I even expected... so happy we made this purchase!
now every time i have to empty the dirt container, it is a relatively easy process. at least i don't have to spend time picking gunk out of the filter. some dirt gets in, but it's easy to get most of it out by banging the filter against the side of the trash can. but all the big gunk like carpet fibers and cat hair is trapped by the stocking and never reaches the filter. i put a new stocking over it after each cleaning.
besides the ease-of-emptying (thanks to the other amazon reviewer) (i uploaded a photo in case it's not clear how to do it) the vacuum itself actually makes vacuuming fun. i have a one-bedroom apartment with wall-to-wall carpet only in the bedroom and stairs. i have a regular rug in the living room. the rest is just floor. this vacuum seems to be the perfect size for my place. it's truly amazing how much fur (i have two cats) and dirt this thing picks up each time. my apartment has never been so clean! and this vacuum is very easy to use.
the "stairs handle" is VERY convenient and makes vacuuming the stairs much easier than with any other vacuum i have used. and it doesn't hurt my back the way all other vacuums have done, because it's pretty light. i used to dread vacuuming my stairs, but now i don't mind at all.
i didn't think i'd ever actually use the "pet paw" but it turns out to be perfect for cleaning fur off the sofa, the bean bag chair, and the cat tree. the hose itself is also very nice. it's not extremely long, but it's very stretchy and it doesn't get tangled. it's great for cleaning the tops of books, or crevices, or whatnot.
after i'm done it's nice to be able to collapse the handle and stick the vacuum in a closet. actually i don't bother to put it away half the time, because it's small enough that it doesn't get in the way and i like having it out & easily accessible.
all in all i think this is a wonderful vacuum (well, assuming it lasts) and i'd recommend it to anyone with a small house or apartment who has at least some carpet, or who has pets, or who has a bad back.
Let me list the pros and cons for this machine.
Visible dust canister
Cleans carpets and bare floors very well
The filter is a pain in the ass to clean - do it outside.
The pet brush mounted on top falls off easily - will be using velcro to attach it more securely.
Hose is a bit short, although it does the job.
Most of the cons are really peeves and Eureka could have designed it better, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons. It does a great job of cleaning up after our 2 dogs, 2 cats and our 9 year old daughter. For the less than 70.00 we paid for it, if it lasts 2 years, it will have been worth the money we paid for it. I will be happy to buy another one at that price in 2 years.
Update: February 3, 2012
About 2 weeks ago, while my wife was using the vacuum cleaner, it fell backwards and the handle came out. It would not stay in place securely, so I had to drill a metal screw through the aluminum shaft and into the plastic handle. Also, the tab on the release mechanism for the handle/shaft broke, but the rest of the release mechanism still works. We wound up buying additional filters from Amazon a couple of weeks ago. An after market filter that looks like the original and a Eureka HEPA filter. These filters are about 40% cheaper on Amazon than in the store. The two filters together from Amazon cost about the same as the HEPA filter alone at the store. We also went with the cheap, nylon stockings to cover the filters so that they wouldn't get clogged. The nylon stockings are working quite well and save a lot of time and labor in keeping the new HEPA filter clean.
