What a great collection and even better value. For whatever reason I love Szell's work, and the variety and quality of these recordings (mostly from the 50's) are impressive. I would have given it 5 stars even at two or three times the price.

This release will be of interest exclusively to Szell collectors, and then for only one or two of the pieces included. These are pirate recordings [Note 9/2/14: This is incorrect. See the comments below.] presumably transfers from LP and with no acknowledgement of sources (primarily Sony, some Decca). And virtually ALL of these items are available in commercial releases, made from master tapes. So why bother at all? In my case I bothered because of the two Mozart concertos and the Weber Konzertstuck, which are available, to my knowledge, only in another pirate release -- from Urania. I had hoped for perhaps some improvement in the sound over the Urania, which itself isn't all that bad but one keeps hoping.

The introduction to #24 immediately revealed the signature distortion from what I believe to be noise reduction processing -- i.e. a strangely metallic wavering kind of effect. I listened on for 5 minutes or so. Overall, the sound might be slightly improved from Urania, and the piano sound seemed pretty natural. So there it is. If a marginal improvement over another LP transfer release on one CD's worth of material is worth it to you, go for it. But try to get it from one of the other sellers. I got it for less than half the listed price from Amazon.

One other strange aspect of this release, and something partly common to Urania, is the representation of Szell's Mozart K. 131 as a mono recording from the mid-fifties. It's nothing of the kind, but was made in stereo in 1963. And Szell made only one recording of this piece. (I referred to discographies by both Donald Rosenberg and Michael Charry for verification on this.) Whether the stereo was retained in the present reissue I cannot really say. Isn't that sad? And my system has pretty good stereo imaging, so I would guess they transferred it in mono. I mention Urania because they have another release featuring this same supposed mid-fifties K 131. As the kids say, "What's up with that?" And with the release under discussion you get the bonus misrepresentation of the Mozart Symphony #33 as being of the same vintage. No, it was also made in the sixties (1962), and also in stereo. And also currently available. So is this a new business, the "antiquing" of fairly recent recordings and marketing them as historical reissues? But it seems self-contradictory: The kind of person who would be interested in this product in the first place would know the truth.

Edit: I checked the other Urania release and it includes the Symphony #33 as well. So it's not a "bonus" misrepresentation after all -- just a run of the mill misrepresentation.
