Very good, glossy Douglas Sirk 1956 romantic melodrama. Rock Hudson plays an oil industry engineer who works for a magnate who partially raised him alongside his son and daughter. The son is played by Robert Stack as an over-indulged rich boy who has never worked a day in his life, with money coming out of his ears and has a deep affection for booze. Dorothy Malone plays the daughter, another over-indulged spoiled brat with money to burn and a penchant for sleeping around with anything in pants and an unfulfilled yen for Hudson. He sees her as a former sister, and now as a skank for who he still has brotherly affection. Lauren Bacall plays the secretary who falls in love with Stack and marries him, but is loved by Hudson. She realizes her mistake but is willing to fulfill her obligation to Stack. Stack's biggest problem, among many, is that he has a low sperm count and may never father a child, which he feels he needs to do so as to please his father and outman Hudson. The best moments are when Malone mambos up a storm at any given moment. When she mambos with Hudson, WOW, what a moment. Hudson dances like he has a broom taped to his back. Malone even mad mambos while her poor put-upon dad falls down the stairs and dies. Watch this torrid soap opera. The Criterion Collection DVD is excellent quality with a few extras. Very entertaining and highly recommended.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Great film for fans of Bacall, Hudson, or Malone, but not a Real Classic 30 de junio de 2014

Wow, what a film. I am a HUGE fan of Lauren Bacall and Rock Hudson so after spending way too much time on wikipedia one night I couldn't believe I found a film with them costarring. They seem like such an unlikely pair!

I'm in my 20's so all of my exposure to these great actors has been through dvd's and TCM. Regarding the dvd, I found the movie quality to be pretty good but I do wish there had been a few more extras on it. The film itself is as wonderfully melodramatic as I could have hoped for. If you are looking for a true classic, this isn't it, it definitely seems dated and a bit over the top compared to other movies the two did, but if you are a fan of them or Dorothy Malone this is quite good.

I like Lauren Bacall's wardrobe here, very unique and flattering. I found Rock's character to be a little dull at times. This reminded me quite a bit of a slightly worse version of Giant, certainly not as long.

Overall I'm glad I bought it, but it isn't my favorite movie for either of them. However I am very glad that this film introduced me to how good Dorothy Malone is. I will be looking for more of her in the future.

This is a rare movie and would be mediocre with the wooden performances of Rock Hudson and Lauren Bacall. However, the supporting cast gives the best performances of this movie. Robert Stack and Dorothy Malone blow this movie away with their above averages performances. The plot of the movie revolves around a New York secretary, Bacall, who marries a rich alcoholic insecure son, Robert Stack, of a Texas millionaire. Also included, there is a family friend, Rock Hudson, in love with Bacall and a nyphomanic sister of Stack's, Dorothy Malone, who is in love with Hudson. This is clearly Dorothy Malone's movie, which she won a best supporting actress Oscar award and rightfully so. Malone proves she can act and is more than a mother figure as Constance Mackenzie in Peyton Place. Enjoy this above average movie.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas More Than Melodrama 1 de marzo de 2009

Other reviewers seem to heap back-handed praise on "Written on the Wind" by describing it as melodrama or soap opera. For sure, director Douglas Sirk had a flair for glitz but I found something a little Shakespearean about this account of a doomed industrialist family. Sirk cleverly telegraphs the events that will doom playboy Kyle Hadley(Robert Stack). The film begins we view Hadley as a spoiled rich brat. As the film progresses it's revealed that Hadley is a man trapped by his own demons and neuroses that aren't really spelled out considering the time the film was made, 1956. That's probably all for the better because it's more compelling to allow the audience to draw their own conclusions. Hadley reaches out to his trouble-shooter played by Rock Hudson and his wife(Lauren Bacall) but despite their best efforts they cannot penetrate Hadley's veneer. Stack delivers probably the best work of his career that will dispell any notions of the monotone Eliot Ness and he is abetted by an alluring Dorothy Malone as Hadley's temptress sister. This may be director Douglas Sirk's most ambitious and best film. Essential is an understatement.
