Sinopsis

I first saw this movie as a teenager and at the time, did not completely grasp the subtleties Lee actually presented. Having recently re-watched for class, I understood so much more of the undercurrents and side commentary. I am surprised and saddened to read most of the negative comments regarding the movie being "past it's prime", "too raw" or "pointlessness". As it turns out, the meat of the film is spot on addressing racial tensions that still haven't been truly addressed 20 some-odd years later. The movie is actually dedicated to victims of racial injustice of the time, and one could equally substitute recent victims of social inequality. So while I agree the music and dress is stuck in a time warp; the true subject matter of racial inequality, social unrest and a tendency to overlook the tough issues that will not be systemically addressed are still very much relevant in an Obama era. It's is purposely hyper real to make a viewer pay attention as the subtlety continues to be willfully overlooked. There's a reason this movie is a classic.

This has to be one of Spike Lee's masterworks. Sadly, many of the central themes are as relevant today as they were 25 years ago.
A star-studded cast and a well-written script, combined with Lee's directorial skill makes this a movie for the ages. Rosie Perez makes her movie debut in this film along with veteran actors, such Danny Aiello, John Turturro, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn, the late Robin Harris (Bebe's Kids), Frankie Faison, Martin Lawrence and Steve Park.
There are few films of this caliber being made nowadays.

Great film, the dvd menu is poorly deisgned and it makes annoying beeping sounds when you shuffle from "film" "scenes" extras" ect.. also menu is estetically unpleasing. the most used "extra" is the theatrical trailer and they put it way at the bottom of a sub menu- digital design choice. this entire menu system needs a redesign. the film is a great film.

Incredible film and shockingly very little has changed since 1989. I greatly appreciate the rather real examination into prejudice and racism from a variety of viewpoints. I plan to use this film in my classroom this year as its representation of racial profiling is multi-facted, well-done and heart-breaking. The theme is very complex and the title... it's not as easy as it sounds to "do the right thing."

This movie goes beyond bigotry beyond dissatisifed human interaction.

As Mookie sits with his head in his hands at the end of the movie wondering what he has brought upon his own community, his own people, you know that this movie will fool only the people who refuse or are unable to look deeper in what troubles our world.

Lee's admission that blacks are the ones not opening the stores in the community, causing the trouble in the Italian owned pizza parlor, is the focal point of this minor masterpiece.

He allows both sides of the story to be told and at least in the movie doesnt apologize for that.

And I only say "minor" masterpiece as to not confuse that observation with his masterpiece of movie making, Malcolm X.

When first viewing the movie you'll take sides but of course.

If you side with the black pov you'll cheer Radio Racheem and his militant style.

And if you take the white pov you'll know the pizza guys are in the right.

BUT!!!, if you value honesty above prejudice you'll have a meeting of (your) mind(s) and KNOW what and where the truth lies.

No matter that Mr. Lee might have to play the race game when circulating throughout life/the streets, his thought is forever on celluoid/dvd and cant be changed or re/mis interpeted.

Do the Right Thing ... indeed mo fo!!!!
