Good speculative fiction must have strong, believable characters facing problems we can identify with - even though the book is set in a futuristic and foreign world, we need something to relate to in those characters that makes us care about them and think about ourselves and our own lives. This is what Stine does so well. The setting is the future, the quest is for the very survival of the planet, and the characters are heroic. But their struggles - to resolve complicated relationships with their fathers, to make decisions about what they want to do with their lives even if it might contradict what their parents want, to learn what it is to fall in love and to make sacrifices for others are all things any young adult and any adult can relate to. Varik learns compassion for those he has always classed as "other" and blamed for his mother's death. Marisa begins to see the humanity in her father and recognize her own mistakes. Both characters evolve through their experiences and become more than they were at the beginning of the novel. At the core of this novel is humanity in all its complexity. The adventure, the quest for Fireseed, the struggles along the way and the people Varik and Marisa meet, carries the reader along on this evolution. A thoroughly enjoyable read. I look forward to seeing more of these engaging characters and the fascinating world Stine has created." - Shawne Steiger reviews

What if only your very worst enemy could help you save the world? Fireseed One, a futuristic YA thriller, is set on a near-future earth with soaring heat, toxic waters, tricked-out amphibious vehicles, ice-themed dance clubs and fish that grow up on vines. Varik Teitur inherits a vast sea farm after the mysterious drowning of his marine biologist father.
When Marisa Baron, a beautiful and shrewd terrorist, who knows way too much about Varik's father's work, tries to steal seed disks from the world's food bank, Varik is forced to put his dreams of becoming a doctor on hold and venture with her, into a hot zone teeming with treacherous nomads and a Fireseed cult who worships his dead father, in order to search for Fireseed, a seemingly magical hybrid plant that may not even exist. Fans of Divergent will likely enjoy this as well as those who like romance with their page-turners. ***Indie Reader notable, YA finalist in sci-fi & YA in USA News International Book Awards and Amazon bestseller.
