Reseña del editor

Sixteen-year-old Rebecca Herrera Hayes faces every teenager's biggest nightmares: bad skin, bad hair, and worse . . . turning into one of the living dead. Becca's life changes forever when her cousin Spence comes back to their small Wisconsin town carrying a deadly secret he's becoming a zombie, a fate he shares with her through an accidental scratch. Now she must cope with weird physical changes and habits no girl wants to be noticed for. Then she meets Gabe, a good-looking part-Z like her and she fears she may be falling for him. But how can he, who shows hardly any Z symptoms, be interested in someone like her? Time is running out . . . and Becca needs his help as she and her cousin Carm search for their missing mothers and fight off hungry Zs. Most of all, she needs to find something, anything, to stop this deadly transformation before it is too late."

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Life as a teenage half-zombie 2 de julio de 2016

'Girl Z: My Life as a Teenage Zombie' was a fun read. It tells the story of teen girl Becca who was infected by the zombie virus, but didn't become a full zombie. Instead, she became a half-zombie with unpleasant skin problems, an appetite for raw meat, and a faint but embarrassing odor. And you thought YOUR teenage years were bad.

The story doesn't run to a lot of life-or-death battles with zombie hordes or random character deaths as in the television series "The Walking Dead." Becca's half-zombie life may be exciting and contain some threats, but not enough to terrify timid readers into closing the book for good. It reminds me of those old teen monster movies from back in the sixties, such as 'I Was a Teenage Werewolf.'

The writing quality is overall quite good. There were a few parts when Becca's personal unhappiness was the main thing going on, but they were relatively brief and didn't detract from enjoyment of the book. I look forward to reading other works by this author.

This book is a pleasant departure from all those YA books that are filled with annoying levels or teenage angst, and/or contain content that shouldn't be read by anyone under 27. And actual adults can read this book with pleasure. The target audience, I would guess, runs more to girl teens than boys, but any young man who doesn't insist on a massive death count in his zombie fiction might enjoy it.

There have been a lot of zombie works written recently, but this one is actually worth reading. I was surprised that the author managed to find a new perspective/ treatment of zombies. At least I'd never seen it before. Thoroughly enjoyable read!

My notes on the book:
* Some wonderful prose: "like stringing a pearl necklace with gloves on"
* Fun names like Nurse Teapot.
* Humour, even in places you would not expect "after she poked my in the arm to get my eye straight"

Girl Z is NOT what I expected at all. I knew for months that I wanted to read this based on the whole, teenage girl living as a zombie, aspect. I also knew that this was a YA novel and that's why this book ended up being a pleasant surprise for me. Honestly, I expected there to be a lot of teenage girl drama, petty arguments, competition over boys, etc...I can assure you that those elements were not a part of this story. I'm not going to give away too many details or "spoilers". If you're going to read this, which I hope everyone does, the story will be so much more fun to read without knowing anymore than what you read in the books description. I would also like to point out that, even though this is considered a book for young adults, Girl Z will appeal to anyone that enjoys books about the zombie apocalypse. The greatest thing about this novel is the originality. Christine did a fantastic job using her imagination to create believable situations and characters. I am very impressed by the originality of the Zombie virus, the characteristics of the zombies and part zombies, and the struggles the main character faces throughout the various unique situations she encounters. I'm really hoping that there is going to be a sequel to Girl Z although, Christine Verstraete did an excellent job with leaving the ending open for the readers own interpretation.

If you've read as many zombie books as I have (I believe I'm up to about 60 now) you may be getting that "been there, done that" feeling. I can guarantee that you will NOT have those feelings with this book. If you're looking for a fresh, fun, and fast-paced New zombie book, download, Girl Z: My Life as a Teenage Zombie! I firmly believe you will not be sorry you did so.

Great job Christine!! You've got a new fan for life!! I'm really looking forward to reading other work from you and (hopefully) Girl Z, part 2!!

A new strain of the zombie virus has broken out that turns people the into a partial zombie. Some show outward symptoms such as gray skin and sores on their skin and some show no signs of this disease at all. Learning to cope with her new disease is hard for Rebecca because she is a teenager and has to learn a new way of eating and looking like...well a walking dead person. Rebecca along with her cousin and best friend Carmella we find that not everyone excepts a person with the disease and how hateful people can be to yes...even a teenager. I really enjoyed this story by Ms. Verstraete because it is so different from so many other zombie stories which look at a more serious form of the disease...dead people walking around trying to eat the living and the living trying to kill the walking dead. No...in this story we see a teenager living with a disease that is not fully understood and also trying to be just a teenager...wondering what to wear and if the cute boy will like her. If you are a fan of the zombie genre then you will like this fun...fast read. Even though this is a story about a teenager I found it wasn't just geared to a younger reading audience and will appeal to adults too. I am so looking forward to reading other books by C.A. Verstraete who I find to be an amazing story teller.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas A Strong, Fresh Take on "I Was a Teenage Zombie" 25 de noviembre de 2013
Por Stephen D. Sullivan - Publicado en Amazon.com

GIRL Z is a fun, fresh take on zombies with an engaging central character and a strong point of view. Becca is a normal teenager until a chance encounter infects her with the Z virus. Then her whole world goes topsy-turvey, and suddenly she's a zombie whose decaying condition can be controlled by a strict regimen including diet and meds. Naturally, this makes growing up even more difficult, and that's not to mention that the world is struggling against the zombie apocalypse. Though it all, though Becca remains focused on trying to regain her "normal" life and protect her friends and family. And isn't that what most of us would do?

This is a strong first novel from C.A. Verstraete, and I look forward to her future endeavors -- which, with any luck, will include a Girl Z sequel. It's also refreshing to see a teenage monster book with a woman as the protagonist that bears no resemblance to Twilight and its ilk.
