The GPSMAP 78SC is as advertised. The screen is just as small as the picture indicates.
The device works and does what it is supposed to do. Where I have issues is with the lack of options
for Maps (Nautical and other) from Garmin. It does output some autopilot commands which I am using for research (wish it output all autopilot type commands). I don't get why everything has to be proprietary maps instead of
allowing the user to put his/her own maps from other companies on the unit. I purchased both city navigator and US Lakes maps. Unfortunately, the proprietary formats do not allow you to install both on 1 SD card. So you practically need 1 GPS for driving to the lake and another GPS for navigation or plan on swapping SD cards which increases the risk of losing a card. I bought this unit for use on a Kayak, but I may have to bring a magnifying glass to actually be able to read it. The unit does float which is a plus. It sure would be nice to be able to install Navionics maps or something similar. At least Navionics can be updated. Next unit I purchase will most likely be a Lowrance after doing further research, mapping options seem to be much greater.

This unit does everything I need for exploring the Chesapeake bay on my sailboat. One reviewer said it lacked Highway view, I believe this is renamed to Automotive Mode. I've attached a screen capture of this mode.

I have been using this about about 200 days a year in the field since I got it several years ago. I put a screen protector on it, and change it out once or twice a year. I use this all day everyday for field biology work, navigating 2.4km transects, marking data points, etc. It took some getting used to Basecamp, and I still use Mapsource for some stuff to work with files, but the Garmin software is WAAAY easier than the deLorme stuff. I got a Delorme Earthmate PN-60w for a backup/replacement when my old Garmin 76 got run over, and I found the PN60much to difficult to figure out, and the software was crazy. I got both because fo the ability to download satellite imagery to them. The Delorme software is to tedious, too many layers. Garmin you just say high resolution, and go for it. The Garmin download speeds are SLOW. To get a 150mile by 100 mile area at high res, expect to spend a day and ahalf coming back and clicking on the next section you want download. a 200mb file will take an hour or so. I have tried on faster connections than my 5mb/sec setup, and it is still tediously slow.

Pros-Indestructible(mostly)
I like the 10000 waypoints, I put a 32gb memory card in there and have about 20gb of satelite imagery downloaded onto it.
I like the old style push buttons
I go a day and half on my rechargeable AA batteries that I charge on my little solar charger
I think you can go 2 days on regular AA's, though I use the screen saver that turns the screen off at 15sec, 30sec, 1 min, or 2 min intervals
Pro and con-customizable setup, you can make it look like your old style garmin format for those who are too used the 76, but it is somewhat tedious to do that, and it is a little too easy to accidentally hit reset to factory-that does not erase your data, just your page setups, map setups, etc.

Cons-Garmin sat imagery is slow to download, requires their $30 a year subscription service. OH, and, if you have sat imagery on your computer that you downloaded while your subscription was in effect, once it expires, you can't move it back onto your device. They want that $30 a year. Eh, cost of doing business for me, maybe not so appealing to a recreational user.

Recently purchased the garmin 78sc--it worked for 1 week, then got error message (cannot unlock maps), and the unit continued to be inoperable--called garmin after reviewing all negative info on this unit--they said garmin knew about problem and a fix was under way--when reviewing internet info, however, it looks like there have been complaints about this error message for 5 months, and still no fix---they refused to take the unit back, and said replacing it would only give me another bad unit--they said i should wait for a fix and they would contact me----doesn't look like they are too serious about the fix---nothing like sitting around with a brand new unit that doesn't work for an indefinite length of time, with a caeat they they will contact me when they have a fix

shame on you garmin---you used to be a reliable company--one of the benefits of amazon was that i returned it to amazon for a refund
buyers beware!!!!

I have the 76csx(it died) and the old software and user options are way better on the old Garmins than the new Garmins. But having said that, I love this GPS(not the OS)! the screen is magic, colourful clear and the OS is very fast. Very happy with my purchase!
I am a professional yacht captain and avid part time fisherman, my handhelds get beat up and used almost daily.
UPDATE:
Unit died the same month the warranty is up! I have found this issue with Garmin before and now I think I have had enough with their products... At the beginning of this month(August) the unit was splashed with a wave while fishing, it was left face up in the sunlight. Condensation formed on the screen and a few weeks later it died while on the job. This is unacceptable for a marine IPX 7 RATED PRODUCT, OTHER OF GARMINS HANDHELDS HAVE DONE THIS EXACT SAME THING TO ME!!
