Although this reviewer has not seen the Broadway production of THE GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER (and with the good seats topping $150, that isn't likely to happen soon), this CD is great fun. The show is based on a 1907 book which also inspired the 1949 Alec Guinness comedy, KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS, although for copyright reasons this show cannot trade on the name of that movie. Essentially the score is a spoof on Victoriana/Edwardiana, and in particular the condescending and underestimating attitude the British rich took (still take??) toward their poor. While at times the over-enunciation and precious singing resembles Gilbert and Sullivan deconstructed by Monty Python, it's good fun and good satire. Songs include "Poison In My Pocket" and "Better With a Man," where two dear school chums leave little to the imagination about why they enjoy each other's company. The orchestration takes part, too: listen for when the action shifts to Egypt and the Grand March from AIDA can briefly be heard on the piano. You can think of this show as the lighter side of SWEENEY TODD if SWEENEY TODD were to have a lighter side. (Here's where I mention that Jonathan Tunick supplied the small-band orchestration, as he did for many of Stephen Sondheim's shows.)

At home playing the CD, GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE sounds like a little show, with its minimal musical instruments, and I sometimes wonder it didn't go to and stay off-Broadway. But I like it and the CD is cheap, and the show booklet contains lyrics in what I can only describe as a highly melodramatic typeface. GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE was nominated for ten 2014 Tonys and snagged four: Best Costume Design, Best Direction, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Musical. Not bad for a D'Ysquith! Trivia note: the abbreviation on the CD, "O.B.C.R.," stands for "Original Broadway Cast Recording," not "British."

I have seen "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" twice and, if I lived closer and had deeper pockets I would see it many times more. The entire cast is superb and obviously enjoy working together, the set and costumes and costume changes are incredible, and the music is magnificent. I am typically not a fan of musicals but I cannot stop singing songs from this show-they are so brilliantly written and so fun!
I was disappointed by Amazon when I scrolled down to see the track list only to find that it has nothing to do with "A Gentleman's Guide" and that this had been mentioned 13 days ago by another reviewer and has yet to be fixed! Come on, Amazon--you can do better than this!

The cast was superb! I didn't know what to expect but knowing that one person was playing a myriad of characters, it had to be good. I was not disappointed. Clever lyrics, comedy, storyline...Bring on the Tony Awards!

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Second Best Musical in a bountiful season - a great Broadway Cast Album 13 de mayo de 2014

This beautifully produced Broadway Cast Album (full synopsis, many color production photos and excellently sung score by Broadway new comers Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak) will serve as a great reminder of a rich experience for those who see the show and a tempting introduction for those who haven't. If the preservation of the period orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick seems a trifle thinner on disc than it seemed in the theatre it in no way diminishes the sprightly fun - and if Tom Kitt & Brian Yorkey's score for the dazzling IF/THEN is more precisely on the pulse of modern pop music, A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE... is, after all, a musical comedy firmly rooted in Victorian operetta/farce. Not to be missed by any fan of musical theatre at its best - or the sublime Ealing film comedy, KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS which shared a source novel with A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE... .
