The tripod functionality didn't disappoint. However, the rest of the multitool was mediocre. I've owned several Gerbers before and they all have been easy to use (easy to get the attachments out) and polished. This one, the attachments were very difficult to get out. It seemed like perhaps Gerber rushed this to market - or maybe I got a defective one.
I decided to keep it because of the tripod functionality. But, this is not my everyday knife.
Not so good. As I say the tripod legs do not end up leaving you with a square stand. They don't flare out the same degree on both sides. So you will need to adjust the ball head to get a level camera if that's what you are looking for. None of the blades lock out when open. No lanyard bit. The finger catch for the philips blade is substantially below the surface of the blades on either side of it. There is no can opener. The holster that comes with it only can mount as a vertical drop, rather than a horizontal mount like the suspension multi tool holster (fortunately the holster is about the same size, but you lose the ability to carry the suction cup if you switch holsters.
The multi-tool itself does not have any marking on it as to where it was manufactured or assembled. That suggests to me that it was made in China, and that it's also likely that in the next few months we'll see cheap knockoffs of it showing up on the market as well. Though how one can go from this to cheap, I'm not entirely sure. The color of the soft rubber/silicone parts is a slightly different shade of green than the image on Amazon leads you to suspect. It's a decent subdued light green rather than fluorescent.
I'm not sure I'd recommend it as a 'go to' tool for a dedicated photographer. But for those of us who occasionally want something just a little bit better than a selfie stick who also have a remote shutter control of some sort (bluetooth dongle or smartwatch) this can do the job.
With that said, it is not a terrible product. I did not buy it to use with an DSLR or large camera. I bought it to use with a small point-and-shoot digital camera, so it should be sturdy enough to handle that. Another plus is that the suction cup mount for phones works really well. I have a rubberized case on my phone and the mount stuck amazingly well to it. Now for another complaint. Like the previous reviewer mentioned, the tools are incredibly hard to open. You really do need another tool just to open these...well, that or tough nails. I assume though, that this will become less of a problem over time as these tools loosen up a bit.
Despite being very disappointed in the plastic handle and tripod legs, I am giving this multi-tool 3 stars, rather than one, because it is actually reasonably well made. The blades and tools are high quality, and the phone suction cup mount works very well. In the end though, I would instead recommend buying the Gerber Crucial Tool and an inexpensive portable tripod.
It just felt too flimsy in the handles. If you squeezed the pliers, the 2 handles would touch...
GERBER, please come out with a model 2.0. with updates.
