And lastly, while going to the grocery store or the gasoline store typically doesn't make you think of taking survival gear, you Compact scout knife is so light that you can always carry it and have it available when you merely have to make some tiny cut to get out a coupon from the paper. Now I am in the waning of my years, age 73, but my grandfather suggested that I always have a pocket knife available just for those simple situations. I have followed that suggestions for decades. I have never needed to use my pocket knife to survive some dangerous situlation, but my knives have always found a way to be useful over time. "Back in the day" the carry knife was a folding nice. Now Gerber, and other companies, have provided us with a far more useful knife in the form of the locking pocket knife. This one is so light, a bit over one ounce, I seem to recall, that it is never a problem in your pocket. This is a great knife at a very reasonable price. Thank you, Gerber, thank you Bear, and thank you Amazon. I"m carring my Bear Gryllis as I type.
I've decided to edit this review 2 years later. I carry this little guy with me a lot, and I haven't had a reason to complain about it once. It gets 5 stars for usefulness and durability. It may feel cheap due to the handle, but it's an impressive little knife.
As a rule I generally steer away from anything with the BG mark on it.
But... for the price I decided to give this little knife a shot. There are 3 areas of it that I'd like to draw attention to.
1. The blade: It's a good looking blade, and while small it is actually pretty substantial and durable. The blade alone is why this knife received more than 1 star.
2. The handle: It's pretty cheap plastic. I get that they wanted to keep the weight down since it is such a small knife, and they certainly accomplished that. But the feel is just straight up cheap.
3. The lock pivot: Really Gerber? The lock pivot looks like it was ground down by an amateur. On a Gerber knife you expect to see quality. Not critical pieces that look like they were thrown in as an afterthought.
I wish I could say it's at least the best sub-$10 knife I've ever bought. But I can't even go that far considering I picked up an MTECH for less than the Gerber that looks as nice and operates almost as smoothly as my $50 SOG Escape knife.
But, for the price I paid I can't really complain. I got a pretty decent little knife for cheap.
