Works great when it works.

Every once in a while (between computer on/offs, maybe three times?) it does not light up or work. I have to unplug and replug again for it to work... This happens with several USB ports. I have Win10. With Powermate software, the custom functionalities (such as fast forward and pause etc...) never stick when PC boots up next time, have to open Powermate to refresh these functions.

I love how this thing looks and the light is just pretty. Just wish it works consistently :( I'm thinking of getting a second one to see if its an issue with my unit.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Good, some Mavericks problems 8 de enero de 2014

I bought this device to use as part of a home automation project. It's connected to an OS X server, and it works quite well. I've explored the features of the software, and it's quite nice. You can do a lot of things with it, but the main idea is that you can program actions on the PowerMate (any or all of the six possibilities: press, long press, turn left, turn right, press and turn left, press and turn right--or any of these plus modifier keys like Shift or Control, so you actually have many more possibilities) to do just about anything: press a keystroke (possibly the most common use), adjust something like volume or do a play/pause, or even launch an AppleScript. (The last one is quite handy for my purposes--controlling Philips Hue via a Python script I wrote that I launch with appropriate parameters via an AppleScript--but the possibilities are just about endless.) You can configure different sets of actions depending on the active application (so maybe pressing the button in iTunes does a play/pause, but pressing in Word does a paste action), and you can also configure "global" actions that aren't tied to a specific application.

Some other nice things: the software can control more than one PowerMate. I have two, one for two different rooms, and you can choose which action sets go with which device. With the software, you can also control the blue LED. I found the default of full brightness a bit too much, so I turned it down. You can also make it pulse, but you can only control the rate (it still pulses from dim to full brightness, which I don't like) or tie the brightness of the LED to something on the system like volume level or CPU load. The bottom of the PowerMate has a non-slip silicone pad that makes it good for sitting on desks without moving around during use. In case anyone is interested, however, I wall-mounted mine and can say that this peels off easily if needed (but not so easily that it didn't take me days to figure out that this was even a possibility).

Now the bad news: for a while after the release of Mavericks, the PowerMate was not compatible. Actually, it mostly worked, but it registered presses and turns as mouse events (clicks and left/right cursor movements, respectively), make it occasionally unusable. While never to my knowledge documented as a problem, the long press feature also stopped working for me on Mavericks. Griffin has since updated the PowerMate software to fix this issue, and indeed the problems with presses and turns are fixed, but for me, long press still fails about 75% of the time I try to use it, no matter what settings I try. I know it's not my PowerMate because, like I said, I have two, and they both do it. I know there have been at least a couple different hardware revisions (not really noticeable) to the PowerMate and I know at least one of mine is a bit older, so maybe this doesn't affect the new ones, but as far as Griffin has documented, everything "should" work with all of them. In any case, I was surprised that such a Mac-friendly company took so long to offer support for the latest OS. I hope they do better going forward.

Some of you may also be interested to know that Griffin has announced a Bluetooth version of PowerMate that should ship later in 2014. I wish this was around before I bought mine because I had to figure out a way to get USB into the next room for my project! Hopefully the same software is compatible with both the wired and wireless versions and they maintain a commitment to keeping it updated.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Great, auto-startup not recognized in Windows 10 though... 22 de julio de 2016

Love this thing, can't add more to any other reviewers except something I didn't see, which bothered me, and continues to be a problem.

In windows 10, there's no way this starts up by itself. It's just not recognized, whether the startup module, or whatever the case is. So I had to manually put the shortcut to the PowerMate Application in the Startup Menu and physically make Windows see it every time I start up to make it work.

Also, sometimes coming back from Sleep Mode renders it useless and I have to unplug/plug it back in and then run the Powermate App again to make it work. Oh well, still a great toy.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Great little volume control 24 de junio de 2015
Por Austen Henson - Publicado en Amazon.com

Awesome little piece of technology.

I had a volume roller on my old Corsair K70 keyboard and quickly discovered that I couldn't use my computer without that convenience. When I switched to a Ducky 4, which didn't have the same kind of volume control, I found myself getting really frustrated.

This little guy fixed that problem. It is simple, it is attractive, and it does EXACTLY what you would expect; twist to change volume, press down to mute (Though, you can change what the press actually does using the Griffin software if you like).

The only annoying thing about it is that the software HAS to be running in order for it to function, and the software is not included with the device. You must go to their website and make sure to download the correct one. Every time you turn your computer on, you need to make sure to start up the Griffin software. I really wish they would keep that somehow built in to the device itself, or at least include the software with the device instead of making me go hunting for it, but once you have the software it works great.

It also might be important to point out that the color of the light cannot be changed. It is blue and only blue. You can make some small changes like the brightness and/or pulsing, however.

All in all, it is an awesome little device and it does exactly what I need.

While I only use the PowerMate as a volume control, it performs that task perfectly. I also really like the mute button aspect of it and the quality of this product is first rate. It is silky smooth to operate, looks awesome and is child-simple to operate. My only criticism is the packaging, which is horrible. You'll need a knife or scissors to open it up and remove the PowerMate from the plastic cocoon it's encased in.

I'm running the PowerMate from a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit installation. First --- do NOT plug in the device until AFTER you've installed the driver. I downloaded the Vista driver from Griffin's website, installed it without issue, and THEN plugged in the PowerMate. It was identified correctly by Win7 and worked immediately. No reboots were required. I'm using the 'Global' profile, by the way.

I'm using the PowerMate in conjunction with my ASUS Xonar U7 USB audio card. While the U7 has its own volume control (both hardware and software), I prefer to keep it AWAY from the immediate area around my mouse and keyboard, simply because of all the cables running in and out of it. With the PowerMate, it takes up less than half the space a mouse consumes and there's just ONE (USB) cable to deal with, instead of the FIVE cables attached to the U7.

In short, the PowerMate is one of those so-simple-you-can't-believe-it devices that's intuitively obvious to use. Aside from the packaging, it's an impressively engineered device, works flawlessly and is exactly what I was looking for; a large volume control. Good stuff.
