Bought this to back up my media files, and after a few hours of copying over about 400Gb the drive started to emit a high pitched whine. it got to the point that it sounded like a jet engine every time it spun up or down.

Can't verify. Can't repair. Can't seem to reformat it or even unmount the damned thing.

I have never had a drive fail so catastrophically in less than 24 hours of receiving it.

Piece of garbage.

We bought this 2TB hard drive on the recommendation from a friend to back up our media content. The hard drive was great for the first year, then it start to die. We contacted Hitachi tech support who promptly sent out a replacement. We were very impressed with the service and the quick response from Hitachi.

The first replacement was dead on arrival. When we received the 2nd replacement hard drive, we were able to retrieve most of the data from the failing hard drive before it finally crashed. The second replacement hard drive lasted 1 1/2 week before it started showing signs of problems. It crashed with all the data being lost. The click of death. The freezer trick did not work. Finally a third hard drive replacement was sent. It was supposed to be a new hard drive and not a 2 previous reconditioned hard drive.

We lost our entire media collection and now are starting over again.

I understand that sometimes products fail. I get it. But when the products fail three times in a row. Not good.

The tech support started out being very good. Then it turned bad. Very bad. At first they wanted me to pay the shipping cost of the replacement. They eventually paid for all the shipping cost - (To and From).

Our media center was down for 5 weeks and we lost all our date.

We finally replaced the Hitachi hard drive with a Seagate and we use this Hitachi as a 2nd back up. Won't take the chance with important data. Nothing to loose.

Most frustrating thing throughout the process was that the Hitachi support service team was more concerned about their company interest first before taking care of the customer. Not good in the long term for the company or the customer. We have moved on to a different hard drive company.

A very disappointed customer.

I will only buy Hitachi drives now. I've had SO MANY Seagate drives fail in the last 10 years, and WD is not much better. I know WD owns the Hitachi drive group now, but I'm hoping they will keep the manufacturing separate from the other division. I've used these drives in my own PC and now replace all notebook drives with this brand without issues. I had to replace my Seagate drives in my own PC 3 years in a row!! The first time, I had 2 drives in a raid configuration, for the speed. When they died, i was just out of luck. Next I installed a larger drive, backed up regularly, online and to a Maxtor external backup. When that drive failed one day, and I replaced it with yet another Seagate, My online backup was not complete, I hadn't noticed it was full and not backing up for months, and the Maxtor external drive had manual backups not up to date, I now use Hitachi drives which I manually mirror what is important along with the online and an external drive with complete snapshots taken weekly.

One of my desktop systems was starting to fail and had to repair win7 several times. Took an image just in case the drive failed. When the Hitachi arrived it was wrapped in two layers of sticky back bubble wrap and came via USPS. I did not think the packing was very good at the time. I disconnected all other drives on my desktop system, except for the failing system drive and the new Hitachi. My plan was to clone my system drive to the larger Hitachi and expand the partion. I have performed this several times on other systems using Clonezilla without any problems. I have used Hitachi drives without problems before and my 7200 laptop drive is noticeably faster than the previous smaller drive. When I connected the Hitachi to the desktop system, the BIOS reported the Hitachi drive was about to fail. I proceeded anyway and the Hitachi hung part way through the cloning. The BIOS continued to report imminent failure. I return the Hitachi and reordered a Seagate drive that cloned and expanded the primary partition without problem. The Seagate came via UPS and was in a box with plastic cradle packing. I thought this was much better than the Hitachi packing. Not sure if the Hitachi problem was caused by bad packing and handling but my new system is working fine on the Seagate.
Thanks for Listening.
1.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas AVOID THIS SELLER 12 de diciembre de 2016

Unfortunately I didn't bother to read al the negative reviews here:( I ordered the 2TB version. Arrived defective. Never worked. As soon as I powered the computer on, just heard a clicking/whirring sound. Never showed up on the desktop. I tried it on a Mac and a PC, internally and on a USB 3 dock. Same result.
Contacted seller. I have to pay for shipping back to the seller. Not worth it from where I live. And I don't have the original packaging anymore.
PLEASE AVOID this seller. Sells defective drives.
