*** After 'outgrowing' the BROTHER B & W laser print and Canon Pixma inkjet printer, I needed a printer to meet my needs for fast speed, without much less need to change the toner, add paper, or remove paper from the output tray in order to complete print jobs. I read somewhere that one should not have to add "paper" more than 1x a week. I had been adding paper almost 3-4 x a days as my legal practice grows. Also, I had to change out toner about 1 x a day or so. With this printer, I have not added paper more than 1x a week, or changed toner for more than 3 weeks so far.
This has saved me a lot of time especially as I can print from my Iphone. I was in a client meeting down the hall. We were able to print out docs more efficiently without having to bring the printer down the hall b/c of HP E-PRINT where one only needs to send the doc to the HP e-mail address provided. This enables one to print to this printer from anywhere.
WIRELESS CAPACITY - I wanted a "wireless" printer and could not figure out if this qualifies as one. I found reviews and descriptions about this feature confusing and ambiguous as to whether we can print "wirelessly". After finding out for my myself, I confirm that the printer can print "wirelessly" from your Iphone or via HP E-PRINT and from my "computer". However, the printer itself must be hooked up via ethernet. So for my needs (I have an ethernet cable connection available) this has worked out well. I do not have to physically hook up my devices directly to this printer via ethernet in order to print.
I highly recommend shopping around b/c the "new" price around $800 is steep. However, you can find new, or almost new ones at amazon.com or ebay for about $625 including shipping. This printer is the "one" for me and has saved me precious time and has increased my efficiency in getting docs out, managing files, printing out letters, copies, discovery, etc.
Since I was using this on a network, it immediately searched for the device -- but I hadn't plugged in the cable yet -- so I plugged it in and had it search again. It found it immediately, then began the installation process. It took about 5 minutes, and then I was able to print effortlessly from that computer. I then went to the next computer, inserted the CD there, and again it found the printer and installed it on that computer. Ditto for the third computer. In each case it immediately found the device. (I make a big deal of this because my previous HP color laserjet would take forever to be found on the network.) In each case I printed a one-page text and a 1-page photograph to make sure everything was connected.
So now the really good news. The colors are great! Much better than my HP CP3505N. In fact, the entire mechanism of this printer is leagues above the 3505. One of my major complaints with the 3505 was the cartridge design -- they were built with a spring mechanism that opened the cartridge when the door was closed. But the plastic holding the springs on all four cartridges eventually broke, rendering the cartridge -- and the printer -- useless until I got a new cartridge. The M551DN does not use a spring mechanism. The cartridges slide into the machine sideways so that the ink is always available to the printer, and now there is no spring to break. (And trust me, these awful springs always broke after the warranty period, but way before the cartridges ran out of ink. And at $150+ per cartridge, that was annoying!)
But the news gets even better than that. The M551DN comes with 4 FULL-SIZE cartridges (not demo sizes). That alone makes it worth it. It is also faster (33 pages a minute for both B&W and Color), has much more memory (which means you don't wait for the computer and printer to talk to each other) and it is quiet. I know some reviewers complain about the noise when printing, but it really isn't bad.
So bottom line -- this is the best HP color printer I have had so far. Of course, it's brand new so I can't yet speak about how it does when it's three or four years old, but it seems to be better built, better equipped, and better able to handle the demands of our small office!
He said not only was it not NEW, it had a history of printing some 15,000 pages. Also said that machine must travel with toner cartridges installed, otherwise it ruined calibration. Hd gear gaining noise. He said it had other issues and was not worth fixing. My fault for not setting up machine when I received it, a $1600 mistake.
Buyer from this ellen beware.
