HASH(0xa0a67d14) de un máximo de 5 estrellas If you like Kurt Weill 28 de julio de 2008

If you like the music of Kurt Weill you will definitely like this. It does not have the non stop hit songs that 'threepenny' does but then it really doesn't have as much music as threepenny but all the songs on this are great and are of the expected Weill Wiemar style. When I listen to it I do have to program out the naration however because it gets in the way.
But there are more recognisable songs here then just the Bilbao song and the sailor song plus there are several wonderful pieces I'd never heard before and a few that I'd not heard with their original orchestration and love even more than before. The three 'Helisarmeelied' of the rival armies are fantastic (though short) and they lead up to 'Das Lied vom Branntweinhändler' which is now my favorite song in the entire piece. I've heard other renditions before but this is the best.
It's not just the wonderful time tested pieces such as 'Surabaya-Johnny' or '...Mandelay' but many other pieces that should be recorded such as 'Lied von der harten Nuß'and the Heilsarmeelied.
So do not be put off. If you are a Weill fan you will definitely like this album. Plus there is another recording of this piece done in english which puts to rest the notion that there is little interest in the piece.

HASH(0xa01e24ec) de un máximo de 5 estrellas Important Weill, but not his best. 17 de octubre de 2005
Por B. Marold - Publicado en Amazon.com
Formato: CD de audio
'Happy End' was written in German by Kurt Weill and Bertold Brecht shortly after their great success with the original 'The Threepenny Opera' on the Berlin stage. The play has the distinction of being the source of the often performed Bilbao song and the sailors' song. Otherwise, there is not a lot to enjoy, especially as these two pieces are done by so many Weill specialist singers.

It is not surprising that unlike 'The Threepenny Opera', 'The Seven Deadly Sins', and 'Mahagonney', there is this one recording of this work. And, if I am to understand the price correctly, it is only available from a third party at a rather dear price.

If, in fact, you can't get this for less than $20, don't bother. Spend your money on Ute Lemper or a Lotte Lenya recording.
