“Will Harry survive?”

This is the story of a broken warrior – a warrior victorious in battle but broken and defeated in peace!

It tells how a man wins a great victory in combat, and then loses his will to live.

For Harry, being a fighter pilot and flying the F-15C fighter plane on Combat Air Patrol over the Iraq-Iran border was the epitome of success. After his wing man is shot down, he finds he must test his abilities and training when faced with overwhelming odds yet decides to engage his enemies in air-to-air combat.

While many have described this part of the story as the best description of air-to-air combat they have read as Harry figures out how to deal with incoming state-of-the-art Su-27 Iranian fighters; that is not the point of this story.

While scenes from this book place the reader in the cockpit of a United States fighter jet in air combat; this is essentially the story of the dissolution of a man who has faced death in the most extreme circumstances, emerged victorious and survived.

In the aftermath, Harry discovers he must dig deep to learn how to fight and survive in the battlegrounds of life. . . Will he?

In this story, Harry faces the most difficult demons of his life. It is a multiple front personal war with demons from a deep past haunting him and some nice newly minted demons resulting from the glory of survival.

This is not a perfectly crafted novella, doesn’t claim to be. If you are looking for Ernest Hemingway or other great polished fiction writers, you would be well served well to look elsewhere. But it does provide a short description of a warrior’s fall and poses questions and delivers a great moral story.

The questions are “Will Harry survive?” and/or, more importantly, “Will Harry prevail?”

The author is struggling with his own demons of doubt and trying to decide if he can continue to channel Harry to see if Harry will find “Redemption” in further episodes.

The author hopes, if you decide to purchase and read, you will appreciate the broken warrior. Not just Harry, but the thousands and thousands of veterans who have served our country faithfully and are dealing with their own issues. Though their travail, they all remain proud of the service they provided their country. They are the true warriors. We continue to pray they will not merely survive but will prevail. We owe them that much and more!

When you finish this book, you will ask yourself, “Will he survive?” You think you know the answer but do you, really?
It tells how a young man wins a great victory in combat, and then, once returned to society, loses his will to live.

For the protagonist, harry, being a fighter pilot and flying the F-15C fighter plane on Combat Air Patrol over the Iraq-Iran border was the epitome of success. After his wing-man and fellow fighter pilot is shot down, he finds he must test his abilities and training when faced with overwhelming odds yet decides to engage his enemies in air-to-air combat.

This part of the story as the best description of air-to-air combat I have ever read. You imagine yourself in the seat of a combat fighter in the middle of air-to-air combat. These vivid descriptions of this battle are worth the price of the book itself.

While scenes from this book place the reader in the cockpit of a United States fighter jet in air combat; this is essentially the story of the dissolution of a man who has faced death in the most extreme circumstances, emerged victorious and survived.

In the aftermath, Harry discovers he must dig deep to learn how to fight and survive in the battleground of life. . . Will he?
This contains intense action and the resulting high human drama for the aftermath.

I highly recommend this book.
5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas It's almost like a flight simulator in book format 8 de junio de 2017

This was a deeply emotional read for me, and one that I read straight through in a matter of hours. As far as the aviation theme of the book, I could really imagine myself being there in the cockpit of the plane, experiencing everything that the pilot did. It's almost like a flight simulator in book format.
But the emotional elements of the story really hooked me to the story equally. Harry's story was such that I felt a great deal of empathy for what he was going through. Even though I have no military experience, I can really appreciate (and really relate at some level) to what this brave warrior endured, both in the cockpit and out of it. This is a great tale well worth reading!

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Well written Story about an Air Force warrior that makes you think! 19 de abril de 2012

As I turned off my Kindle, finished with Harry's War, I couldn't help but think about what our guardians in the sky must think and go through. Harry's War is a well-written, insightful description of how our fighter pilot warriors think, and the challenges they face when they come back down to earth.

Benjamin writes for a living, so it is no surprise that Harry's War is well-written. What is a surprise is how the story follows Harry through his evolution as a person, and I was heartened to see how the author transformed the notion of war from one meaning to another (I won't give the game away here). I am guessing Benjamin has some first-hand experience with this, which made the story not only believable, but meaningful as well.

No book is perfect, right? I do wish Harry's War had more dialogue, to make it more personal. I kept finding myself wondering what kind of person Harry was. Does he have a sense of humor? What is his his favorite drink? What kind of women is he attracted to? Of course, that would turn Benjamin's novella into a novel, which would defeat the purpose of the format, and is why I didn't reduce my rating to a 4-star. Bottom line, Harry's War is a strong foundation for a more robust novel. I would like to see more from Benjamin and read about Harry up-close-and-personal!

With that minor criticism out of the way, where Benjamin excels is not just the descriptions of the military systems, hardware and weapons, that's all very cool, but he does a masterful job in dissecting Harry's psychology. He helps the reader understand what drives his main chracter, develops his strengths and weaknesses and analyzes how Harry's background affected his trajectory in life and where he lands. This alone makes Harry's War worth the read.

Another positive is that I don't often read novellas, in fact, this was my first. I enjoyed the crisp format, and Benjamin makes the most of it. It took me just a few hours to read, but there is alot of information packed into this work (that's a good thing).

Overall, an excellent work! Well done Benjamin!

This story was an action packed sequence of a fighter pilot that fought in 'The War in Iraq.' I was brought in touch with some of the struggles that these soldiers had to face and now have a deep respect for what they have to endure.

This story, although a short story, was perfectly written and gave me a thrill of a lifetime. I was very pleased by the author's depiction of what this event could have been like; I felt like I was there.

I would strongly recommend this for those that are curious to know what it was like over the skies of Iraq and just want an amazing adventure/ thriller to read also.

This is a great read and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

Harry’s War tis a novella that tells the story of Air Force Captain Harry Miles Harry had joined the Air Force in order to fly fighter planes, and after working honing his skills has been assigned to fly sorties over Iraq airspace. As the story opens, his squadron is due to rotate back home and he’s anxious to rack up as much combat time in the air as possible. (Flying over enemy space counts as combat time, even if no combat actually occurs.)
On Harry’s last mission, however, there is plenty of combat, as he and his wingman engage Iraqi aircraft. Harry’s wingman is taken out quickly and Harry has to fight for his life.

Returning home to the United States, he faces a fight of a different kind.

Author Ed Benjamin, a retired Air Force Colonel, knows his stuff and knows the minds of pilots. The novella starts a bit slowly with too much information coming all at once… interesting as it may be!... but once the action starts it will have you on the edge of your seat.
