Descripción del producto
An extraordinary and lovely work bringing together all aspects of Enku's life, art and spiritual journey. Enku's poems (in Japanese and English translation) are accompanied by beautiful photographic details of his sculpture, creating an intimate and evocative glimpse into Enku's generous spirit and unique confluence of his natural and worldly experiences. These personal experiences are further explored in the introductory essay that brings forth Enku's unusual and dramatic life as a wandering monk/sculptor/poet. --Dr. Audrey Yoshiko Seo. Author of The Sound of One Hand; Paintings and Calligraphy by Zen Master Hakuin and Enso; Zen Circles of Enlightenment.
In Heaven's River: Poems and Carvings of Mountain-Monk Enku is a marvelous tribute to the life and art of Enku, the 17th century Japanese itinerant wonder-working mountain monk, sculptor, and poet. The stunning images, lovingly photographed, well convey the magic and transcendent beauty of the holy images he created, some from mere scraps of wood, with a few cuts of the knife, to serve as household talismans, and others hewn from tree trunks, life-sized, carved with precision and set on the dais of a large temple. This panorama of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Shinto Deities, and folk gods nearly all display radiant, blissful smiles. Enku's carvings are an act of devotion, a teaching vehicle, and a vision of a higher reality. While Enku's carvings are celebrated world-wide, his poems are not at all well known. The book presents for the first time one hundred of Enku's poems, his songs of liberation, in the original Japanese, with romanization, and sensitive English translation. Two poems on a page are set against a full-page illustration of an Enku carving, often of some detail from an unusual perspective. Beautifully designed, informative, and inspirational, In Heaven s River: Poems and Carvings of Mountain-Monk Enku is highly recommended. --John Stevens. Translator of One Robe, One Bowl: The Zen Poetry of Ryokan, Wild Ways: Zen Poems of Ikkyu, and many other books on Japanese art and culture.
In both poems and sculptures the clarity of Enku's insight and the depth of his compassion cut to the heart. --John Maki Evans. Author of Kurikara; The Sword and The Serpent, and Trog, mountain practice poems.
