Reseña del editor
Essay was originally composed for the Arnold Historical Prize at Oxford, and afterwards rewritten for publication a year ago. The present edition has been revised throughout, and several new chapters have been inserted. An Index has teen added, and aC hronological Table of Emperors and Pppes prefixed. Care has been taken to make the references to authorities and the dates as accurate as possible, but as the author has been obliged to correct the proof-sheets under the constant pressure of other work, and at a distance from all books of reference, some errors may probably have crept in. An apology may seem to be required for the unfamiliar forms under which several proper names appear in the following pages. In some instances these forms are those which prevailed among us a century and a half ago. Then the book proceeds to narrate the main adventures of the most relevant emperors going over quickly over those who aren't that historically important. The aim of such adventures and the impact it had on the empire and the relationships emperor/pope and emperor/empire is also discussed
The books main themes are the pulse btw emperors and popes, the ideals of the HRE and more at the end the book concludes with the creation of the German nation, after having narrated the 30 yrs war, the Hapsburg emperors, napoleonic wars and the rise of Prussia and its rivalry with Austria after the war vs Napoleon. A chapter to the Byzantine empire is also in the book.
Overall a good book to get a general idea /view of the HRE history, obviously is an old book and maybe focuses too much on the psychology of the people of the time, the ideals of the HRE etc. but don't expect to learn lots of detail about the empire legal system (broadly covered across the book as it changes through the history of HRE) or the military campaigns of the emperors (action and results are usually how they are narrated, doesn't go into strategy or battle details). So as previously said nice book to get an overall view of the history of the HRE
