It has been over 35 years since I had seen this movie and I found it captivating. It was so refreshing to remember that there were incredible actors like Peter O'Toole and I developed an appreciation for Sofia Loren's talent. It is difficult to move a stage play to the big screen, but it was very well directed and edited. In our current egocentric era, this movie reminds us that striving for altruistic and noble, albeit impossible, goals can greatly impact and transform lives.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas The worst makeup of any movie and yet one of the best movies ever made. 5 de octubre de 2011

This move has some of the worst makeup. Peter O'Toole's makeup is laughable at best. Yet this is a well acted well written wonderfully cast masterpiece. Without nudity or cussing the time in which the characters live comes across. The evil of the times is evident throughout. Heinous crimes are common and the Church is oppressive, corrupt, murderous and barbarous. Any women left alone is unsafe and no one bothers to help them. None but one. The Man from La Mancha. The opening scene and scenes in the dungeon where everyone is waiting to be tortured to death and the ending are my favorites and so moving. The music and lyrics are sweeping and inspiring. Peter O'Toole and Sophia Loren are no great singers. Even so tears easily well up in my eyes each time I watch this movie. For all of its faults its still one of the best movies ever made. What is right with it is so much more important that all that is wrong with it.

My son watched this with me when he was younger and thought it was stupid. A couple of years later and a couple years older and wiser he watched it again. Realizing that even though this movie is not about any particular person or people. Such events were once common place. When he watched it again he felt the deep despair and utter hopelessness the people of that time must have felt. He understood how impossible a situation they lived under. He realized how imposable it must have been for them to have believed it could ever be different. It brought him to tears and he too was inspired even as his old man had been. This is what makes this movie great. I wish every movie could do that.

Glad to have this film now on blu ray - more durable disc, better color. However, I wish someone would have spent a little more $ removing more / all of the scratches & blotches & etc. on the film original. In other words, more attention to complete restoration. At least we got this far in preserving this great film for the ages!

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Miguel de Cervantes: "For me alone was Don Quixote born, and I for him. I give him to you." 20 de octubre de 2015

From the beautiful songs of the musical to the serious tragicomedy of the play within the play, this is no fluff piece of light entertainment. It is great cinema and has something to say about many things...idealism and honor, bravery and chivalry among them. And yet this wonderful musical was panned by the critics when released in 1972, in part because a singer like Richard Kiley (from the stage musical) didn't play the part of Cervantes/Don Quixote; and Sophia Loren, who is also not a singer had the temerity to sing her own lines. But O'Toole as Cervantes/Quixote and Loren as Aldonza/Dulcinea deliver masterful performances; and the dubbed singing voice of O'Toole seems to come naturally out of his own pipes. The familiar story of Don Quixote is framed by an incident allegedly from the life of its author, Miguel de Cervantes. Don Quixote in the play within the play is a mad, aging nobleman who embarrasses his respectable family with his adventures. Backed by his faithful sidekick Sancho Panza (James Coco), he duels with windmills and defends his perfect lady Dulcinea, even though she is actually a downtrodden harlot named Aldonza. If you've never seen this you owe it to yourself to watch it at least once....using a phrase from its most famous song, the world is truly better for this musica

LOVE IT!!!!!! I've not seen the Broadway musical on which it is based so I cannot compare it to that. I have read "Don Quixote" on which the Broadway musical is based (actually I'm still reading it...Book Two now but it seems "Man of La Mancha" is inspired by mostly Book One.)

It's fun. Peter O'Toole is fabulous as "The Knight of the Rueful Countenance"; Sophia Loren is terrific as Aldonza; and James Coco as Sancho.....PERFECT. So what of the singing? What does it matter???? What any one of them may lack in singing is more than made up for in their performances which are tremendous.

And the story within a story is so interesting as the characters in "real life" are recruited to play parts in the "story". Great fun.

In the end I think this movie is performed beautifully.
