5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Excellent game in a sleek new edition! 6 de marzo de 2011
Por Sam F - Publicado en
I recently purchased Hive Carbon in order to play it with a number of friends that enjoy abstract strategy games. Hive can be compared to chess in that players take turns placing or moving pieces, the different pieces move in unique ways, and the game ends when one player manages to "capture" the other player's Queen Bee. But the games are worlds apart and it would be inaccurate to label Hive as a chess variant. In Hive there is no board. The pieces themselves form the board. At the beginning of the game the first player and then the second player lay down one piece. After that, all subsequent pieces must be placed on the hive (board) in a position where they do not touch other pieces. I think the game is loads of fun, but I love chess and have strong fondness for abstract strategy games. If this doesn't describe you, then you may not find it to be as fun as I do. Another thing to notice is that tempo is very important in Hive. If you can force your opponent to lose tempo you can gain an advantage. This is quite apparent as the race to surround the Bee can be quantified. Once an overwhelming advantage has been obtained it is very difficult for the game to turn around. I do not know how deep the game is. That is to say, I do not know how many distinct skill levels can be attained. It is worth noting that I've put in 100+ games and I'm only now beginning to notice some subtleties that escaped me before, so this isn't a shallow game by any means.

As to the physical game itself; the pieces are made out of sturdy bakelite. They're heavy, hard, feel cool to the touch and make a satisfying clacking sound much like that of good quality dominoes. I prefer the look of the carbon edition to that of the original. The bone white pieces make a stronger contrast with the black that the original's ivory colored ones. Black and white is sleeker and more elegant than the bright colors of the original. The colorful version seem infantile by comparison, Some people have expressed concern that the pieces are difficult to distinguish but I have not had this problem. The etchings of the bugs make a strong contrast against the background and are readily identifiable.

If you want the mosquito or the ladybug this is the version to get. Both of these expansions are included, making Hive Carbon a great value versus the original.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas A gorgeous new classic 29 de marzo de 2011

I collect games of high quality, and Hive is perhaps the highest. The tiles are made of thick bakelite, absolutely gorgeous and a pleasure to handle. There seven basic pieces:
Grasshopper (3) - jumps in a straight line over any number of pieces.
Ant (3) - slides anywhere legal.
Beetle (2) - crawls 1 in any direction, including atop the hive.
Spider (2) - slides 3 spaces without backtracking.
Ladybug (1) - moves 2 atop the hive, then 1 down.
Queen bee (1) - slides 1 in any direction.
Mosquito (1) - copies the movement of any single pieces it touches.

On the first turn, players place one of their piece adjacent to each other, and this forms the Hive. No move may be made which separates the Hive. On each turn, a player may do one of the following:
1. Place a piece so that it doesn't touch an enemy piece.
2. Move a friendly piece.

To win, surround the opponent's queen bee. Quite a delightful game.

This is my favorite abstract game to play. The quality of the Hive Carbon pieces are very nice with no complaints on quality. The game itself is easy to learn yet difficult to master. Most games take about 15 minutes to play and my wife and son both like to play so they can beat me. The color pocket version is still my favorite as it is easy to travel with, comes with two expansion pieces and the colors seem to make it even more fun.

Love the Game. Was delivered promptly. May buy another one as a gift. Highly recommend for anyone that loves chess but doesn't have the time or space for the set up and game length. I have already played it over 40 times with various people and taught it to my kid brothers and sisters.

Not quite "chess without a board" as it was described to me (somewhere) but this is a game that is simple enough that my two kids can play each other but complex enough for me to use it to teach strategy and long-game thinking.
