Descripción del producto

Ireland's bestselling popular historian tells the story of contemporary Ireland - controversial, authoritative and highly readable. Tim Pat Coogan's biographies of Michael Collins and DeValera and his studies of the IRA, the Troubles and the Irish Diaspora have transformed our understanding of contemporary Ireland, and all have been massive bestsellers. Now he has produced a major history of Ireland in the twentieth century. Covering both South and North and dealing with cultural and social history as well as political, this enthralling work will become the definitive single-volume account of the making of modern Ireland.

2.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Detailed History, good perspective, too many details 14 de enero de 2014

Coogan as a broad perspective on Ireland and most of his work is readable and well done. This one was not well edited and had far too much detail on the rise and fall of the myriad parliamentary alliances that govern Ireland. The perspective on the role of the Catholic Church is very informative as was the review of the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland from the 70suntil the current century.

When dealing with an emotionally charged subject such as Irish nationalism you will always find people that disagree with your conclusions. This book is no exception. However, the presentation of the facts and details in this book is very balanced and allows you to drow your own conclusions. There is so much to absorb it would be easy to get bogged down, as is the case with many histories, but Kee manages to keep the narative flowing. A great read.

Very thorough and definitive, but fairly tedious and plodding. I had to force myself to pick up the book to read even about the most exciting events in recent Irish history.

Tim Pat Coogan has completed a difficult task for all historians, remaining true to facts and leaving personal feelings aside. Well written and highly enjoyable though hard feelings were felt about wrongs of history. This is an excellent read in that it evokes emotion while sticking to facts.

Coogan has done it again, he has produced a fantastic book about Ireland in the 20th century. I do think an update to include the financial crisis of 2008-2010 once it fully works itself out would be welcomed. The story is meaty in all the right parts! Bravo!
