I can honestly say that these little speakers are outstanding and sound much more expensive than they are. A great value considering the sound and under 100 dollar price. My only complaint is that the sub is pretty larg considering the sats but that is a minor gripe. I was able to fit this nicely behind a flat screen monitor on a decently sized desk.
From a sound perpective, these sound best when played at a lower volume in comparison with your system's settings. In other words it is best to use your soundcard to control the level of out put to get the best sound. I suspect those giving negative reviews don't have thier systems properly configured and turn the speakers way up. This always gives you a terrible sound as speakers will feedback when the volume knob is turned all the way up to "11". There is a reason why musicians have certain preferred settings on equipment that give them the sound they are looking for.
If you are looking for a speaker set to DJ at a party, look elsewhere. If instead you are looking for a set to fill a room with crystal clear sound at the right levels, then look no further. These speakers sound way better than they are priced; just make sure your settings are right so you can enjoy the crystal clear sound these little guys offer.
I liked the original creature speakers much more, even if there was some fuzz sometimes when you had the computer off. Having the sound actually start coming through the speakers without a half second delay means more to me than whatever reason they added the shut off feature.
As far as speakers go, these are decent. You can find better for cheaper. I like the fact that they are small and compact, as my desk space is a premium. If size and aesthetics are not that important, but sound quality is your main objective, look somewhere else.
These Creature III speakers are noticeably more cheaply made than the originals. The cables/cords are significantly shorter than the originals; the speakers themselves are lighter and sound more "tinny" as compared to the originals. The bass response on the large Creature III unit is not as deep and full as the Creature I was. The satellite units are taller than the original Creature's units are.
All in all, if you can find a used/working set of the Creature I units on eBay or other venue, I'd try to get them rather than the current, cheaply made Creature III speakers. My two cents. JBL took a lot of the cost out of the product and it is not nearly as nice as the original. Too bad.
As far as features go...
Excellent sound, considering the size of the speakers - almost seems like they're really a bit bigger
You have easy access to the Bass and Treble on the front of the subwoofer
Very minimal touch sensitive up/down volume controls on one of the speakers (This speaker goes on the RIGHT)
Unique cable inputs - no mixing up inputs, since they are all distinctively different
Easy setup - you shouldn't need the manual to get this system set up - takes about a minute
Very lightweight - while the speakers weigh virtually nothing, the sub takes about 90% of the overall weight.
For the most part, the finish on black is smudge resistant, but you can see fingerprints in the right light.
Tedious packaging - yes, it's a 1 time thing, but it could have been made much simpler to get it unpackaged.
Sub-woofer could perform much better - it's more of a kick and not so much bass
Speaker wiring is on the shorter side, at about 5 or 6 feet. Power cable to the sub is about the same length.
The chrome plastic used on the speakers and the sub-woofer looks kinda tacky, as it looks very cheaply made.
No clear indicator of which speaker is left, and which is right - no L or R labels on the speakers.
Power button is on the back of the sub-woofer. Depending on your setup, this may or may not effect you.
Overall - In the line of 2.1 systems, these are a great buy for the current price (at $62.50 + Free Shipping). For the original MSRP of $100 I believe you could probably do better, though I have no other recommendations at this time.
