I recently bought this for my young one Diana and she's been having a ball with with it, her first response to it was 'WoW...o!'. I would recommend it for any children who want to be either a pirate, or a warrior princess.
Little Diana has been running around poking people in the legs and just shoulder barging people with it now, but she seems to be out of control because when she picks it up and misbehaves my punishments are roughly 75% less effective against her block.
However, this is only ever useful when its near bedtime and she has the lifelead because I've been at work all day, it's a bad time to clash, because she always has the meter to win.
Overall though, as a consumer I think that this product is a bill of goods, the rockpaper scissors aspect of its game is more of a gimmick than use as a solid toy, and it's application is very situational, you wouldn't use this on the street, and if your child were using this against some steroided hooligan you can surely expect them to most likely leave with a broken back within 4 moves. The point is to use it defensively, but not to get knocked down as it is rather unergonomically friendly to adult hands, so don't wakeup attack with it.
Overall I will give this product 4 stars all around(house). I think it is effective in the scenarios it is designed for and is complementary to Lasso stance. The fact that it can cause 39% unclashable damage in the 2nd round is huge. Outside of that it is pretty meter heavy, so be careful with your money.
The sword is considerably thicker than I expected, which adds to its weight. It's not too heavy for a toddler, but it's certainly not something they'll carry around. It's fine to play with, though.
The lights work well, and the audio is pretty good for a big plastic sword.
The first one we received didn't work at all. No lights, no sounds. At first, I thought the cheap batteries that came in it must just have been dead. After unscrewing the battery compartment cover (I dislike screws in battery covers - I think they're unnecessary and make the simple task of replacing a battery more effort than is warranted), I replaced the batteries, and still no lights or sound. I tried several other brand new batteries before determining that the sword simply didn't work. I emailed Amazon, and within an hour, had a return authorized and a replacement shipped. The exchange was absolutely hassle free, and we had the replacement sword in two days. That one has worked fine since day one.
PROs: sturdy, durable, good audio and light effects.
CONs: not many recorded phrases, unexpectedly bulky.
Would I recommend it? If your child really loves Jake and the Neverland Pirates and likes to pretend he's part of the crew, then yes. It's fine as a toy, but It's not really suitable for a little one to lug around as part of a costume.
The sword is made of a heavy duty plastic and is about 16" long. I would estimate the weight to be about 2-3 pounds. There is ONE button on the backside of the handle and when activated it will play Jake phrases from the TV show and different sound effects. It also lights up the skull and crossbones at the end of the sword with a glowing blue light. There are about 6 different sound effects to loop through.
*The description up at the top says that there are two buttons on the unit, but mine only has one button that activates both the sound effects and light effects at the same time.
Out of all the different Jake the Pirate swords I looked at online and locally this was the best one I had found and I would definitely order this product again if needed.
