We seldom get enough snow in east TN to worry about chains, but last week was very different: 5-15F temps for 4 days with an ice storm Monday, followed by 1-2" of snow Tuesday night, followed by partial slushy-melt on Friday but more snow and ice and re-freeze overnight. It's pretty hilly here, so, even though the city clears the main roads pretty well, we're often stuck just getting out of driveways or neighborhoods (or back home after work). I watched the e-trailer.com video for installing these chains twice, inspected the chains thoroughly, and then went out and put them on - literally took me less than 5 min for both wheels. I was easily able to get up a long steep icy/snowy hill in the neighborhood with the traction control light flickering on occasionally. The only trick: when ready to take them off, make sure you stop the wheels in the same position as when you installed the chains or you'll have trouble finding the disconnection link. In the attached pic, I was on a down-slope and had reversed a short distance to check reversing traction, before stopping for the pic - that's why the chains' tread is seen in the ice (under a thin layer of fresh snow) both in front and behind the wheel.
Installation was relatively easy and I tested it in my car port to be certain they would fit and also just to practice installing them in less stressful cold weather conditions. I highly recommend doing a search on Youtube for this brand and model of tire chain and you will find several videos showing you how it is done. If I were to rely only on the pictures in the installation guide that comes with it, I doubt I'd have figured it out.
The final step of the process where you take the excess length of chain and route it though the various loops and then hook it somewhere on the chain had me discovering it to be a bit short. So, I had to hook it somewhere else that wasn't quite as evenly distributed as it is supposed to be. I'm hoping that when I drive it 100 feet and then readjust it might loosen up a bit or get better situated around the tire or something and then fit as it is supposed to (I didn't do it for this installation test). Even if it doesn't fit as they show, I'm confident it will still stay in place.
I haven't yet had a chance to test these in snow conditions so I will try to update this review if/when I get a chance. "Winter is coming" (yes, I'm a Game of Thrones fan :) I expect they will work exactly like any other device that adds additional geometry to the surface of your tires (chains, cables, studs, etc.) so I think it is more important in this type of review to talk about the fit and ease of installation. Having said that, I currently give it 4 stars. Also, as others have mentioned, there is a piece of plastic in that final step that makes me feel like it's going to be the "weak link" in this chain, without a doubt. Why on earth they decided to use plastic there instead of metal puzzles me and is probably more than 50% of the weight in bringing my review from 5 stars down to 4.
My only big complaint is that they are directional, and i did not find that stated in the instructions. That means that you can set each chain in two different ways depending on if you wrap the lead cable clockwise or anti-clockwise. Found that out when I installed them, started diving, and almost immediately spun out because I had installed them in opposite directions from each other.
