Updadate: It seems as though the customer support at kennsington will be shipping me this "ground loop isolator" free of charge.
Update: Just received "ground loop isolator" from Kensington customer support and now it works great! Sound is much better than going through the AUX port on the ipod and I am getting CD quality sound again. I don't have to max out the sound on the ipod in order to get decent sound.
Still love the sound quality, but not the build quality. As time has gone on, the plug will no longer stay very securely in the phone and very slight touches disconnect the cord. It wasn't great to begin with and now is even worse. You can buy a handful of the 'cheap' cables for what this thing costs and have plenty of spares for if (when) they disintegrate. If I had to do it over that's the route I would've gone. Down to 2 stars.
Several other reviews have complained of this, so I presume it depends on what kind of car you have as I tested it with several iPhones and that made no difference.
I submitted an online support ticket with Kenisington, and within about 10 days, I received a Ground Loop Isolater (GLI) from them (at not cost) which totally fixed the problem. While this 'add on' is bigger and heavier than the original product, since in my car it all just crams into the arm rest storage area, that doesn't really matter to me.
Bottom line - buying this version of the product is a gamble. It may or may not work for you, and while it's great the vendor stands behind the product, unless the aux plug in for your car stereo is hidden away where the bulk doesn't matter and you're willing to wait for the GLI, the fix isn't nearly as good as a product that just worked out of the box.
The sound is just as excellent as in my car where I have a USB port connection from my stereo, which is what I was hoping for.
I was very worried about the length of the cord since many reviewers stated that the AUX port and cigarette lighter port needed to be VERY close together. On the CR-V, they are about 2 feet apart, with one being high up on the dashboard and the other near the floor. But this cord is a perfect fit. Each segment of the Y-shaped split (one for the car-charger part, one for the AUX part) is 1 foot long, and the other end of the cable is 2 feet long (where you plug it into your iPhone/iPod). So the cable is a total of 4 feet if measured separately, including each of the Y strands, but is 3 feet long total if measuring from top to bottom as in the specs listed. If you think you need more length, there are 1 ft. and 3 ft. extensions available on Amazon as well. I had purchased a 1 ft. but didn't need it after all.
The one downside is that the plug-in end for the phone is a bit larger than the regular iPhone/iPod charger that Apple makes. We each have a case on our iPhones. I have an Incipio case and this cable fits into my phone with case no problem. But my girlfriend has an Otterbox case and the plug is just a tiny bit too big for it, so she has to remove her case in order to plug it in. :( It is upsetting but we are going to try and shave away some of her case or just order her a new one.
I am still quite impressed with the quality and durability of this cable as compared to the others out there. This is the way to go if you have an AUX port in your car.
