4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Breathing new life into great old songs 27 de septiembre de 2012

First off, I'm 75 years old so the old songs are something I definately grew up with along with the Bing Crosby's of that era who sang them. Having said that I found this a thourally enjoyable treatment of these old jems! Have listened to it many times since opening the package, and watched the PBS show (which I recorded on TIVO) several times also. I enjoy both, and in my own little (aged) voice, can even sing along with Paul as I remember nearly all the words.

Why I enjoy it so much I can't really pin down. The slow and easy pace of the arrangements, played by some of the best jazz musicians of this generation, plus Paul's clear pronunciation of the lyrics (in spite of his aging voice), and the songs themselves...could be it. To me it all breaths new life into some great old songs.

I feel sorry for some of the younger generation who didn't like this recording because they can't accept that Paul doesn't sound the way they remember him from his earlier days as a member of the Beatles. Well he is nearly 70 years old now and the voice just naturally starts to fade...it happened to Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, too. (He's looking pretty darn good for his age, I must say). Naturally his voice is gonna sound weaker and with a slight scratch. But the arrangements and slower pace suits he current voice (he never was a crooner or a smooth single vocalist in my humble opinion) and this style just seems to suite him at this stage in his life. Look at Tony Bennett who is up in years and still performing but with a slower, softer style. Works just fine!

Can't help but wonder if the record company came up with the idea and promoted (paid for) it, or if McCartney, who is wealthy enough to foot the whole bill by himself, just decided he wanted to do it on his own...just for the fun of it. Either, way I think it's a great recording (accepting the many won't feel the same) and I secretly harbor a wish that he would get the same people back in the recording studio and do another one....there are still plenty of wonderful oldies out there.

In a nutshell, I really enjoyed this CD and think it's a bargain buy at this price!

Paul McCartney and all who played on the album played and sang so well together. For several of these standards, these are the best versions I have heard.

Paul's original songs on the album are wonderful. "My Valentine" is hauntingly beautiful and emotionally moving. My 8 year old son is learning to sign (sign language) My Valentine from the video clip that Natalie Portman did. The song reaches people of all ages.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas A wonderful collection of standards with a couple of Macca originals thrown in for good measure 11 de febrero de 2012

While Paul McCartney is not the first ex-Beatle to explore The Great American Songbook - that honor goes to Ringo Starr's unfairly maligned 1970 album Sentimental Journey, which was actually fairly successful (Number 7 in the UK, and a respectable Number 22 in the U.S.) - this album is a wonderful trip back in time to the music of the pre-rock era. I played both CDs back-to-back the other night and, although Ringo's is a little brassier, both are excellent. The music on KISSES ON THE BOTTOM fits Paul like a glove - it's as though he has been a jazz singer his whole life instead of one of the world's greatest rock 'n' roll vocalists - and Diana Krall and her band (who I am also a huge fan of) provide excellent backing. There is not a bad track in the lot; the highlight is probably Macca's own "My Valentine," written for new bride Nancy Shevell.

There was only one drawback: misleading advertising on various Web sites (including Paul's own) led me to believe that the Deluxe Edition contained two bonus tracks ("Baby's Request" and "My One and Only Love") and said nothing about any retail exclusive. When I received the Deluxe Edition from Amazon, it did not have the two extra cuts, so I returned it for a refund. I found the extended version at Target. The Deluxe Editions at other stores are the same as the Amazon version, and other outlets only carry the standard version. I don't know if there are any other bonus cuts available on other versions; I hope not, because I don't like purchasing multiple copies of the same CD from different retailers to get different bonus tracks.

I know that the elitist rock critics will turn up their noses at this album, just as they have done with Paul's classical work. Well, after 50+ years in the music business, Paul McCartney has more than earned the right to do any kind of music he damn well pleases. If he retired tomorrow - and I don't think he will - he has given his millions of fans a musical legacy that will last forever. So get off his back, please.

This is a disappointment since all the standard songs are rendered in fairly lack-luster fashion, with very little of Paul's distinctive and original styling. Also, many of the tunes are laden with overwritten schlock string arrangements that really distracted from Paul's voice. A nice idea with very little payoff.
