The Klipsch Image One was something surreal to say the least. Something about the headphone said to me that this is not your usual headphone. From human voice to background instrument, every detail was so clear. I went home and spent the next two hours reviewing Image one and it's higher end cousin - the Reference One. My research pointed me to the Reference One even though I had no chance to sample its sound. I ordered the unit and played it through "Amp Audyssey" software on my iPhone. Even though the Amp app does not have the Reference One listed as one of the headphones that the software is tuned to, I used "Image One Headphone" as the next closest one. Blown away is the description I would use.
I own some of the most premium headphones around (Sennheiser 650, B&O AKG, Bose, Sony and many others). That said, these days Klipsch Reference One is my go to headphone. Just as a side note, I did put these on medium volume, playing music constantly for 36 hours to break them in before the initial use.
Some more informed reviewers would put statistics and numbers as to why a product makes sense, but although I am in depths of technology for work, what I would use for these headphones is one word - Sublime!
I compared my Bose OE with these just switching between the two on the same songs. First, I noticed was that they are a lot louder at the same volume setting from my Macbook and my ipod. Second, the clarity on these is better than on my Bose, and I didn't think that would be the case. Third, the bass is NOT overwhelming or muddled (as some reviews have stated) but it is bold. Mids and Highs are crisp and clear. Fourth, comfort and weight, these are very light and very comfortable, but I think the Bose OE are a little more comfy. That said, after a while (1-2 hours) my ears get hot with the Bose, and not with these.
I've listened to Depeche Mode, Muse, Tom Petty, PInk Floyd, AC/DC, Earth Wind and Fire, Mariachi music and Motorhead while comparing the two. I trying as many different genres of music and I can't find one that doesn't sound excellent. I am truly hearing details and subtleties in my music that I've never heard before! That's a huge bonus!
I think I've gotten a great deal! It's sounds as if my Bose are going to be my back up. These Reference One's are AWESOME!!
1-take 2nd place in terms of volume (works well with your portable devices and does well enough without an amp, even though all of these are 32 ohms. FYI-the DNAs are the loudest)
2-take 3rd place as far treble-mid level/clarity-not as clear as the UEs and DNAs (1 & 2 respectively) so may need an eq adjustment to suit individual tastes
3-take 2nd place as far as bass-better than the DNAs but doesn't sound artificial
4-take a close 2nd place in terms of aesthetics/comfort-these have the most "classic" look of the 3 but loses a point for the dual cables on the ear cups which make it more cumbersome to put on/untangle (although I actually like the look of the speaker type cables). Also, these don't clamp as much as the DNAs but would be an unfair comparison to the around ear UEs. These also have the best carrying case among the 3 and the best remote for your Apple products (buttons are well spaced and have a more accurate feel).
Klipsch Reference ONE:
The style is minimalist, but the combination of materials, contrast and obvious quality are a bit striking.
Build Quality: 10/10
Klipsch makes a beautifully engineered, and built product
Very lightweight and comfortable. I did notice that my ears kind of felt like they were "Dixie cups" after a couple of hours though. This occurs due to the noise isolating design, which is another great benefit to have if you are in noisy environments or cannot enjoy your music because other headphones "leak" audio out aggravating others.
These make great bass, but as mentioned earlier, there is distortion when you really push them.
