I didn't feel like pouring $30 towards a cable lock and locally, $60 can perhaps buy the Series 2 Std with cable; but at the US/AUD exchange rate in March 2011 the price of the Evo Mini-7 + cable hit a sweet spot in value and relative security.
Like what other internet people say, the mounting bracket isn't great but it hasn't been working too badly either (it gets easier to use with a little practise) - UPDATE: the bracket (which may well have been updated by now, 2016) works a lot better with a tiny bit of lubrication. Because this is a mini 7" U-lock, it *does* fit neatly on the bike which means I don't have to lug it in a backpack (tip: coil and cross the cable inside the U before you lock and mount it for easier transportation as per photo).
As for locking techniques; the clearance between my rear wheel and seat tube (with bottle cage installed) doesn't make the wheel rim + seat tube a possibility - this option is probably only effective with road bikes. I tend to prefer going for the left chain stay + rear wheel (shift to the large chain ring and smaller sprocket first for some more room). Left seat stay + wheel can also work depending on the bike rack. For lower theft areas, I'm also happy to have the U around the seat tube and cable through both wheels - handy for a quick lock up and it'll still be better locked than nearly all bikes around here. In case any might be about to mention it, I choose to avoid the "Sheldon Brown locking method" especially since I have the cable for the wheel(s) anyway - search YouTube and reddit for more details.
If I could, I'd give 4.5. I can't really imagine there being any lock that's worth a full 5 stars since there's always room to nitpick or compromise be it security or convenience. There are probably fewer ideal locking locations for this lock but then if I used a different lock, I'd simply be less likely to leave my bike alone.
Now the bad news. The 2nd aspect I'm rating: Bike Mounting Mechanism=1 star. The plastic "easy mount" sucks. I struggled with it for about an hour before giving up. The end of the latch that looks like it should be latched on to the bike frame is in reality WAY TOO STIFF to conveniently push on and tighten down. My advice: if you choose to mount this thing, disassemble the end with the allen screw first. Push on the other end with the teeth, but don't push in too many teeth (they're impossible to pull back out). Just push on 1 at a time and check it on your frame to see how it fits. Once you got a decent fit, then put the mount on the frame and re-assemble the end with the allen screw. Again, don't push in too many teeth until you check the fit on your frame because once you push in a tooth, it's impossible to pull back out. The flimsy "release mechanism" will break before you can release any of the teeth out. Horrible design overall. Very disappointed. I'm committing to carrying my lock in a bag now whenever I need to take it with me. The lock is not too heavy and it doesn't really weigh down my bag too much.
The cable lock is just a standard cable lock. Nothing too special. 4' is the perfect size for going around my front tire and locking it to the U-Lock which goes around my rear tire.
Good lock but beware of the poor mounting mechanism.
