After reading The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie, I definitely wanted to continue the series. In the second book, we hear more about the estranged marriage between Mac and Isabella. Their courtship was quick (less than 24 hours) and their marriage full of big parties and even bigger fights. This is really a second chance romance story, which is a trope I always enjoy. There is an underlying mystery that beings them back together again, but what I most enjoyed was the way their past in contrasted with their present. Meaning, they have to see each other in a new light as people who have matured and changed. As a bonus, you get to see Ian an Beth again, which I loved. Lord Ian was a tough act to follow, but Mac’s story is a solid addition to the series.

When this second book in the Mackenzie series begins, Mac and Isabella have been separated for over three years. Their volatile relationship simply couldn’t withstand their fights and Mac’s drinking. Mac is challenged to paint some erotic paintings, and there’s a doppelganger Mac on the loose. So Isabella and Mac join forces, and then, romance….

The Good, The Bad and Everything In Between
-Excellent dissection of a couple in crisis: Though it hasn’t gripped me in quite the same way as Ian’s story did, I still enjoyed the way Ms. Ashley let the story unfold, allowing the little snippets of gossip columns give a glimpse of Mac and Isabella’s past, while the reader stays in the present, watching them on the road to reconciliation. I enjoyed seeing them actually discuss the past, and work through their issues in an adult manner. There were opportunities to go the melodrama, but instead the story always pulled back and went for the true emotional punch instead.

-Mac gives good grovel: I liked Mac, the charming rogue that he is, and it was very easy to see how Isabella fell in love with him. Mac’s personality could be a force of nature and while he could be exciting to be with, I could also see how exhausting it would’ve been to handle his mood swings. In the time they were separated, he never strayed and I was never in doubt of his love for Isabella. When he finally let his vulnerability show, it really did touch me.

-Isabella’s another solid heroine: A debutante swept off her feet the night of her coming out, Isabella was thrust into deep waters with the Mackenzie family. She was cut off from her family and her life with Mac the constant subject of gossip. She handled it as best as she could, but what I really liked is seeing her take responsibilities for her actions as well. When their marriage floundered, it wasn’t all Mac’s fault.

-A little taste of Beth and Ian’s HEA: Seeing Ian and Beth was definitely a highlight. Yes, I’m still cruising in my Ian/Beth love.

-The doppelganger: About the only part of the story I didn’t really need, but it did set up some action and introduced Aimee, is the doppelganger. I understood its purpose, but it wasn’t the strongest part of the story.

The Bottom Line
Still enjoying this series and this is a very good entry in it. I’d definitely recommend it.

While still very well written, I'm seeing a pattern develop in the Mackenzie's series of books which for me, once the patter is discerned, there's not much reason to continue to reading the remainder of the books.

Somewhat unusually, the author began with the youngest of 4 brothers in the first book, the Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie and then moves to the second youngest in Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage. As in the first book about the youngest brother, the second youngest brother is battling demons from an upbringing by a hard, cruel, unloving father. Again, as in the first book, he seeks redemption in the arms of a woman and he messes it up badly. The pattern continues with a contrived mystery plagued with several logic holes and one of the two main characters grievously injured making the other main character realize what they might lose. Finally the book ends with apologies and declarations of love concluding with a wedding between the two protagonists. Thus has been the exact plot of the first two books in the series both of which have a high sensuality rating given the number of descriptive sex scenes.

To her credit, Ms Ashley writes well which makes the journey to the ending a reasonably pleasant read. That said, the journey becomes somewhat less interesting when the outcome is a predictable, foregone HEA. The Captain Lacey series under her pseudonym of Ashley Gardner is much better.

I have always passed on this author's books because they seem to be modern historicals but I was encouraged by friends to try this one. I'm glad I did because I thoroughly enjoyed it. The author got me truly involved in why the main characters marriage ran into problems and I really wanted things to work out for them. The plot with the villain was a little exaggerated but didn't spoil the book for me. I'm intrigued enough by the glimpses of the H's brother Ian, to have downloaded his book to read next.

And I even like my competition, Isabella! Whew, what a dynamic couple!

I've long been in hiatus from 'Scots' novels, and have never before read Jennifer Ashley, because of her Scottish themes. Even when I once read about Scots, I always read about the Lowland Scots, i.e., the Borderers. So what am I doing in the middle of the Highlands (formerly anathema!), for heaven's sake?!

It's all the fault (*L*) of another reviewer (Penny Black) who insisted that this would take my breath away. It did.

Ms. Ashley certainly knows how to tell a story. A great story! There were no anachronisms to jar me right back into reality; just smooth prose and marvelous characters.

I even kept up with the host of sub-plots. Actually, I originally intended to deduct half a star for the sub-plot involving Aimee. I thought whaaat? why's the kid suddenly dropped into the middle of this? I realize, though, that this was to show Isabella Mac's fatherly ways. (I don't envy Mac that train trip. He's a saint!) lol

Anyway, Ms. Ashley doesn't need my advice on sub-plots or any other kinds of plots.*L* She is a very gifted author who has managed to take *me* to the Highlands. Loved the book!

I may soon have to jilt Mac, much as I love him. Cameron and Hart are looking awfully appealing. :)
