to Lake House brought back to me my childhood dream of living on a farm. Although Sting and I are both from urban working-class backgrounds, it is with some sense of returning to our roots that we have come to Lake and are trying to live off the land . . . [as] my father and Sting's father were both keen vegetable growers."
Since it was built in the English countryside in the sixteenth century, spectacular Lake House had been lived in by only five families before Sting, Trudie Styler, and their children settled in. The recipes are earthy and real and some are rather inspirational, and I didn't think any of them were too "cheffy" to try. Nice pictures - not as "3D" as we're getting used to nowadays, but I think their slightly distant quality adds to the atmosphere. You're catching a glimpse, really, not trying to re-create a magazine photo.
The book is a couple of years old now, but I do find I keep pulling it out to flip through for inspiration. I think if this family have got the ability to transform a vast, crumbling house into a family home with a working, sustainable farm, increasing local employment, and encouraging others to do what they can along the same lines, then that can only be a good thing.
I still like Trudie Styler (and Sting). However, I have a lot of experience cooking and know that you don't need tons of expensive ingredients to make a flavorful dish. If you enjoy celebrity cookbooks, get the ones by Linda McCartney; her food is simple and delicious.
