It's been three years since we last heard new music from Tiziano Ferro, and during that time the Italian singer was quite busy. He had number one hits with 'Domani 21.04.09', the 2009 Abruzzo earthquake song he was a part of, and 2010's 'Each Tear', a Mary J. Blige song he collaborated on; wrote a book; and had his share of media attention surrounding his personal life. So when I first heard his fifth album was scheduled for release at the end of November 2011, I was excited. Ferro's known for combining different styles on his records, and given all of the developments around him, I wondered what surprises would be in store for us.

"L'Amore è Una Cosa Semplice" ("Love is a Simple Thing") certainly delivers. It is a departure from what we've come to expect from the songwriter; gone are the acoustic-laden, depressing tracks like 'E Fuori è Buio' or 'Scivoli di Nuovo'. Sure, there are some songs with sad lyrics (it wouldn't be a Ferro album without them!) but this time he's combined them with deceptively happy melodies. In fact, this is the most upbeat I've ever heard from him. No longer a 21-year old kid rapping about life, he's matured into a 31-year old songwriter who isn't afraid to explore different genres of music all on the same disc.

The styles on here are somewhat distinct: 'Interludio: 10.000 Scuse' ('Interlude: 10,000 Excuses') is the album's only true rap song, and on it he proves that he's still as capable of pulling it off as he was on his debut record. There are the usual smattering of pop tracks as well; 'La Differenza Tra Me e Te' ('The Difference Between You and Me'), the album's first single, is an explosion of guitars and unexpected turns, while 'Per Dirti Ciao!' ('I Say Goodbye to You!') is sure to get stuck in your head. Meanwhile, 'Smeraldo' ('Emerald') is a fun combination of rhythms that is most likely going to be a huge it, both in its Italian form and as an English-language duet with John Legend under the title 'Karma'.

The two biggest types of music on here are ballads and basso nova/jazz. The former clocks in with the title track, a sweeping look at love; second single 'L'Ultima Notte al Mondo' ('The Last Night in the World'), is a somewhat bittersweet look at a relationship. And the basso nova/jazz combo, while surprising, is very well-done. Songs like 'Hai Delle Isole Negli Occhi' ('You Have Some Islands in Your Eyes') and 'TVM' ('I Hate You') are deceptively upbeat, hiding painful lyrics. And 'Quiero Vivir con Vos' ('I Want to Live with You'), despite its Spanish title, has Italian lyrics and a sound straight out of a Frank Sinatra songbook.

Unlike previous albums, "L'Amore è Una Cosa Semplice" also features songs not written by Tiziano - 'La Fine' ('The End'), originally a hit for Nesli, and 'Paura Non Ho' ('Fear I Don't Have'), penned by Irene Grandi. But they both work on here. Overall, the album is a delightful, if surprising, combination of styles Ferro has made famous and his magic touch. It's obvious he's not only matured as a songwriter, but is slowly becoming more comfortable in his own skin. It's a wonderful progression and an album that will be in my rotation for many months to come.

I just the last two weeks of November 2011 in Italy, and the video for 'La Diferenza Tra Me e Te' was all over European MTV. What a great song. I also caught an interview with Tiziano Ferro, and he seemed like a really nice guy. I had the song going through my head the entire time I was in Italy, as well as since returning home. Very catchy, and he has a very nice voice.

This is Tiziano's fifth album and his best to date. Very eclectic mix of singing and music styles. Such a unique voice and his lyrics stay with you and are sung with genuine feeling. He's taking a break in 2013 but not for long, I hope. Please come back for a concert tour to North America, Tiziano! 2009 was long ago and recording your new albums in LA doesn't count. :)

I love Tiziano Ferro, but this might be his best album EVER! I can't stop playing it and I got it almost a year ago! The musicianship is wonderful and the songs are true poetry, He has a silken voice that is very gentle but strong as well. Versatile and another good one for a long ride in the car!

This album is fantastic, there is not a track on there that I don't like. And his voice? Pure perfection.... sexy as all get out. This is one great album and I am so glad that I purchased!
