  • How you can involve the people affected in the change in the design of that change. Directly contributing to the success of the change program.



A newly appointed CIO had shaken the place up with some big changes, including a transition away from traditional management practices and towards Agile practices.

How to implement these modern approaches to management in a very traditional organization? A new approach to change was needed. Lean Change Management was needed.

This book describes how myself and team of change agents helped The Commission transform from an old-school public sector to a modern Agile organization. Was it easy? Of course not. But it was possible because of the innovative practices for Change Management that I describe in this book.

I found this book to be extremely helpful in regards to brushing up on change management concepts and new philosophies as it relates to the concept of lean. The examples are great, particular those related to lean coffee's and insight sessions. This book does have supplemental information that can be found on the website leanchange.org. I would suggest this book if you are looking to brush up on new concepts related to change management, or if you need visual examples to use in practice.

I found Lean Change Management extremely useful. Jason uses various change management models (such as Satir Model, ADKAR, Kotter's 8 step model, McKinsey's 7S framework), agile framework, and Lean Startup to come out with a Lean Change Management cycle which he defines as "a non linear feedback driven model for managing change". Jason takes us through how he puts these practices to use in a company called "The Commission". He explains at length the various experiments used, tools to generate insights and means to measure the progress of agile transformation at "The Commission". Interestingly, he also comes out with a Retrospective where he talks of what went well and what could have been done better at the company.

Very practical, with lots of tips, this is a great book for Agile coaches, Agile Consultants and Project Managers who are involved in Agile Transformation.

I don't quite get the "innovative practices" subtitle, I did not learn anything new at all! Contains plenty of "models" - but all well-known (and some quite "worn", like the McKinsey "7S" model) by experienced change managers.
What's so different about "Lean" change management? I did not get any insights about that from this book.
John Kotter's "Leading Change" and the Peter Senge's "Fifth Discipline Fieldbook" are 20 years old but much better and more relevant than this one.

If you have experienced hitting a wall with your agile transformation or adoption this is a must read. Filled with practical information about change management backed up with real world examples I highly recommend this book for all agile project, delivery and transition managers & directors. It has already created a few heated discussions in my lean coffee groups. Jason Little does a great job breaking down some of the obscure lean concepts into actionable items you can start using now.

I think this is a must read for anyone in an organization that is planning a change- from executives to staff. The models presented and examples given underscore the importance of a co-creating change, remaining patient, and constantly measuring progress. It is a quick read that I will likely revisit often.
