Descripción del producto

Descripción del producto

In eleven eye-opening and insightful interviews, this book reveals the lives, thoughts, challenges and hopes of teenage girls living on Kenya's coast. They eloquently tell of fractured and yet supportive families, the struggle to stay in school, dealing with dawning sexuality, boys and men, and their hopes and plans for a better future. Here, voices that are rarely given space to speak for themselves, speak clearly, with humour and grace.

'I couldn't put the book down! These true stories are fascinating. The exploration of the sexual pressure surrounding young girls is well done. And, as a lover of football, I found this aspect of their lives captivating.' Dr. Margaret Ogola, author of The River and the Source

‘It is impossible not to be emotionally provoked by this raw and blatant read. All in all, I would recommend this book to any and everybody. It inspires a deep introspection into one’s life and schools anybody -- no matter how old, what colour or creed -- on ambition and what it truly means to be fortunate.’ Eden Nthebolan, contributor at Africa Book Club

A share of the royalties from this book go back to the girls interviewed and to Worldreader, a non-profit dedicated to making books available to all.

Sarah Forde has interviewed eleven girls over a period of two years about all what matters in adolescent girls' lives: school, parents, boyfriends, religion and football. The girls' stories are all different stories, but there is one thing that they share: their passion for football and being active football players in Moving the Goalposts Kilifi, a youth, sport and development organisation that uses football to empower girls in rural Coastal Kenya. The book is an absolute must for whoever is interested in sport and development, girls' empowerment and reproductive rights or just in real life stories from young women in Africa.
"Let Me Tell You" is easy to read and through Sarah's words you can hear the girls tell their stories. Finally there is a book that gives girls in Kilifi voices!
5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas These stories should be read by EVERYONE 23 de julio de 2013
Por Chris Graham - Publicado en
These stories, simply told, are throat lumpingly, tear formingly powerful.
They should be read by all teenage kids who grumble and complain about having to go to school, do homework, help around the house or get angry and feel hard done by if they don't get the latest fashion accessory or technological 'must have' device.
They should also be read by complacent and self satisfied adults.
They should be read by everyone.
