My first contact with Daudet, specifically with 'La Petite Chevre de Monsieur Seguin' was in High School French and I loved every word. Later on, when I could read French better, I got "Lettres de mon Moulin' and I can't say which one of the stories is better, or reflect better the landscape and the personality of Provence. 'Les Etoiles' is a tender story which may not be understood by a contemporary adolescent, but that doesn't take away its beauty and its innocence. 'La Mule du Pape' is funny; it could have been written by E. B. White or by James Thurber. 'L'Arlesienne' is tragic, and until I read the story I was unaware that Bizet had written his suite based on this story.
I bought this book to put in practice something that I learnt while learning English. I gave the copy of the book together wwith a CD of "Lettres de mon Moulin' to a High School student. Short of total immersion, here is no better way to learn a language than to get the book in front of you and put on your earphones and listen to the CD. I did it in my twenties with English and in my late sixties with German.
Otherwise. Daudet, a French classic, does not need my poor effort at literary criticism to keep him in the privileged place he holds in the French literary pantheon.
