3.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Fabulous Sumi Jo - a "Multi-purpose singer"? 18 de enero de 2012
Por Erik - Publicado en
Formato: CD de audio
World-famous South-Korean soprano Sumi Jo is recording extensively again! This is her third "cross-over" album in just a few years, besides the earlier "Only Love" (from 2000, or thereabouts). Then what do I as a Sumi-fan think of this development?

Well, the CD is a mix of beautifully wrapped pralinés in an exquisite box, but not all the candies taste equally good... No one dare argue that Ms Jo has lost her vocal ability (listen to Gipsy and the bird, or Casta Diva - fabulous!), and the instrumental back-up is competent, but something is amiss. This selection of songs (e.g., Hijo de la Luna, or I dreamt...) is not suited for Ms Jo's voice. Having a beautiful voice does not make her suited to sing everything, because sometimes a voice needs to be burlesque or "trashy".

Swedish late soprano Birgit Nilsson used to tell a story about a (lyric) soprano who wanted to sing Wagner. When Ms Nilsson asked "Why on earth?", the soprano answered "Because I can manage a high C". Birgit Nilsson's comment was simply "I can manage a high F, but do I sing Queen of the Night?" The unmatching of Ms Jo's pretty and agile voice and the songs chosen for the CD makes me rate it to only a 3. The Hijo de la Luna lacks drama, the Make our garden grow could improve in pronunciation etc.

Regardless what Ms Jo records, I will probably buy it! I only hope that next time it will be Glière's Concert for coloratura soprano, Bach's cantatas, or perhaps a live-recording of Nixon in China (to be given at Théatre Musicale Châtelet in Paris in April - we are going there), in which Ms Jo (as Madame Mao) will couple with Ms June Anderson (as Pat Nixon).

Despite my mediocre rating, Libera is an album of good sound and recording quality, and very good instrumental back-up. I was happy to be able to buy the album as CD/SACD, instead of mp3. Cheers from Erik!

This CD is a departure from Sumi Jo's usual style.
To acknowledge her music career during which she has circled the globe many time. She has introduced a Gypsy theme into many of the tracks, with varying amounts of success.
The thing I most dislike about the CD is the "modern" production style, compression is very evident and to me it doesn't work, reserve that for the talentless masses who need electronic intervention.
I also feel at times Sumi Jo has to compete with the backing to be heard, for me she could sing my shopping list with no accompaniment and I would adore it!
There are real gems here that make the skin tingle and the eyes moist but overall it will never be in my list of favorites.
Her classic works are unsurpassed as indeed are her Crossover albums, this falls a little short of her normal excellence.
I have adored this wonderful lady for over 2 decades now but hope I have given a more or less balanced review.

First, it's made (on DG, but filled with (Korean?) writing) like - well, it is a little book with a heavy cover (not plastic), thick pages, colored pictures and an interview with Sumi Jo - for some reason I was surprised (well, she sings the music, she didn't compose it), she is intelligent, original and perceptive. Very intelligent. Reminds me of a retro of Midori I have on a DVD of her Carnegie Hall recital.

This is as beautiful (if not even more so) as anything she's ever recorded that I have. Not the least of which is a perfectly arranged ALW medley. "King Herod's Song" from JCSS is only played by the orchestra in this, not sung. Even this much was daring for her, her popularity and her career (at least it is in this country), on the other hand maybe she liked the tune (so do I) but didn't feel like ragtime was right for her. Anyway it's there. Also a beautiful and exciting "Carmen" medley, with more than just the Gypsy Song in it. Altho the Gypsy Song (especially sung by Callas) is one of my favorite things.

In fact, to be brief, there are only 2 things on this album I don't like. I have never liked Lehar's "Vilja" - not even as a child the first time I heard it sung by Lisa Della Casa. But that's just me. The other is yet another recording of "Casta Diva". I never liked it (Bellini is not a favorite of mine in much of anything). But with both these songs, she does a beautiful job.

It's a glorious album, I think it's one of her best. And in my opinion, the person(s) who arranged this music deserves a couple Grammys of his own!

I loved it. (And I studied classical music professionally.)
Pieces were carefully selected and improvised in her own ways.
Orchestra & conductor were wonderful.
Really captured heart & soul of each piece with varying techniques and colors. Diction was very clear, and high notes were attacked with confidence. Love her improvisations on Carmen.
It is not all opera, has musical medleys and bonus track as well (which some audiences prefer including myself).
Love the gypsy theme and the album cover.
She is trying many things new, not tackled by most classical artists. I think her music and her photos/CD jacket are very forward-looking and trend and time-conscious.

Broadway tunes, classical pieces and modern songs... Sumi Jo sounds great singing it all! Definitely worth the price of the album.
