Do I play this game by myself anyway? Yes. Don't I know what I am going to do next? Yes. Do I still do it and love it? Yes. Do I get pissed when I kick my own butt? Yes.
If you can manage to get someone else to be your Earth Reborn life partner then this game is a must have. There is just so much depth and strategy that you will never get bored of it. Jet packs, Freddy claws, mines, bombs, radio scrambling, reanimation, healing, shooting, stabbing, smoke screens, corruption, spying, torture, imprisonment, love, destructible environments, and on and on......
Hell just buy it and never play it. Just read the rule book over and over and fantasize about the fun you would have against a great opponent.
So yeah its pretty cool.
The actual pieces seem pretty study; it's been through a quite few sessions without any noticeable wear or tear with the exception of the tiny CP pieces. However the CP pieces' looks aren't important, and they can be easily replaced. The figurines are a bit bland so I am in the process of painting them. They are somewhat difficult to paint since they are attached to the plastic bases, but I think you can remove them and then glue them back in. Overall, the quality of everything is pretty high and I think it justifies the price tag.
I don't believe I have any complaints so far. It is a bit of a time sink, but I've enjoyed every minute. I am always dying to find someone new willing to play with me. It is a bit complicated, but it's never overwhelming. The rules make sense and are introduced gradually. I would highly recommend this game to anyone willing to spend some time playing board games.
Be sure to look through the list of known errata! Either on the official site or the Board Game Geeks forum. Doing so might save you a whole load of heartache.
* The game takes a long time to set up
* The graphic design is horrible
While both of these points are somewhat accurate, the game succeeds in spite of them. There are printable maps online if you really don't like hunting for tiles, and you can get custom-made player sheets with much better graphic design for free online. Happy now?
The game itself is a sprawling behemoth. Everyone I've played it with has the same slightly overwhelmed look on their face as they watch me bring out the many game components. However, as soon as we sit down to play, I explain the rules and their worried expression melt away. The bevy of tactical options allowed in this game begins to wash over them. There's a definite "eureka!" moment during the first scenario that happens around the time you bash open your first door.
I've only played to scenario 4 so far. I can't wait to get farther along. Every new scenario teaches two new rules, but they feel more like a little expansion pack. Everything is already there in the game (particularly on the character cards), you just unlock it as you. Kinda like a video game. The game will grow only as fast as you make it; you could forgo any of rules if you don't like them. If you're already familiar with this type of game, jump into scenario 2 or 3 to accelerate your learning process.
I'm extremely happy with this product. I've never painted miniatures for any game, but I'm doing it now.
