The set is actually two featured figures - Wolverine and Spiderman (great choices there) and two four figure boosters.
My set varied in contents from the inventory of another reviewer but that doesn't matter.
No character cards with this set (because those are a later invention post-dating the game as played in this set) and I wish they had seen fit to include a second reference card of the various powers for speed of play. The newest rules can be retrofitted if you like but the game plays fine as is.
[EDIT 10/24/13 The color/power reference card in this set has been superseded by a more detailed one given away in (for one example) the Iron Man 3 Fast Forces set (and *not* with The Uncanny X-Man fast forces set I note). You can play quite readily with the card in this set, but if the other guy has the newer card you had better share his or you might see some surprising stuff happen. [/EDIT]
I got ten figures, two huge double sided maps, counters, stickers (not sure what these are for), rules, quick-start rules for the terminally short attention spanned and a powers reference card.
Good value for $20.
As advertised, the game is really easy to learn. It helps if you are very familiar with the characters, but the rules are very simple.
The game's figures are nicely done, but some of them are pretty fragile. For example, while I was rotating Wolverine's base, one of his feet became detached. Another character who is problematic is Blade since he is perched on only one leg. Since the game relies on players rotating the characters' bases, lots of stress will be placed on the lower bodies of the figures. Make sure you have a supply of super glue on hand. I re-attached Wolvie's foot, and he's been solid ever since...
Overall, this is a quick-to-learn, pretty accurate combat game made up of Marvel Comics characters.
Heroclix is a strategy game built around comic book heroes and villians. Using the included maps and figures, fans are able to battle with these characters without the need for the massive amounts of paper and dice normally associated with collectible card games or RPGs.
Despite what the description says, this game is more for the middle school and up crowd, though I have seen kids as young as 7 play. Just be warned - Heroclix is EXTREMELY addictive. It combines the best points of strategy games and collectable figures, but also combines their appeal.
Have fun, just keep an eye on your credit card balance.
