A proven program for enhancing students' thinking and comprehension abilities

Visible Thinking is a research-based approach to teaching thinking, begun at Harvard's Project Zero, that develops students' thinking dispositions, while at the same time deepening their understanding of the topics they study. Rather than a set of fixed lessons, Visible Thinking is a varied collection of practices, including thinking routines small sets of questions or a short sequence of steps as well as the documentation of student thinking. Using this process thinking becomes visible as the students' different viewpoints are expressed, documented, discussed and reflected upon.

  • Helps direct student thinking and structure classroom discussion
  • Can be applied with students at all grade levels and in all content areas
  • Includes easy-to-implement classroom strategies

The book also comes with a DVD of video clips featuring Visible Thinking in practice in different classrooms.

Contraportada

How can classrooms become places of intellectual stimulation where learning is viewed not in test scores but in the development of individuals who can think, plan, create, question, and engage independently as learners?

Making Thinking Visible offers educators research-based solutions for creating just such cultures of thinking. This innovative book unravels the mysteries of thinking and its connection to understanding and engagement. It then takes readers inside diverse learning environments to show how thinking can be made visible at any grade level and across all subject areas through the use of effective questioning, listening, documentation, and facilitative structures called thinking routines. These routines, designed by researchers at Project Zero at Harvard, scaffold and support one's thinking. By applying these processes, thinking becomes visible as learners' ideas are expressed, discussed, and reflected upon.

Making Thinking Visible includes a DVD of instructive video clips featuring visible thinking strategies being applied in a variety of classrooms.

"Making Thinking Visible is essential reading for every educator who strives to provide students with the skills they need to become thoughtful and enthusiastic directors of their own learning."
--Tina Blythe, author, The Teaching for Understanding Guide and Looking Together at Student Work

"When thinking is made visible, learning is inevitable. Making Thinking Visible invites the reader to craft a new definition of education and presents a dramatic leap forward for education."
--Adam Scher, school principal, Bloomfield Hills Schools, Michigan

SOY SECRETARIA Y COMPRE UN LIBRO PARA OTRA PERSONA DEL DEPARTAMENTO.

CÓMO PUEDO COMPARTIR EL LIBRO VERSIÓN KINDLE?

ESPERO ALGUNA INDICACIÓN DADO QUE ESA PERSONA NECESITA LEER EL LIBRO POR SU CUENTA Y NO POR ATRAVÉS DE MI SESIÓN DE PC.

GRACIAS.

The book is great. It really impressed me with its layout and and clarity. I ordered this book via Kindle however, and I do not have access to the dvd. I am using this book for a class and I need that DVD. It should have been stated that the DVD would not be available via Kindle if that was the case. I am very disappointed. the customer service agent to be confused and could not understand why I couldn't see the dvd. i explained it 12 times. I say this with clarity because after the third time I started a stick count of me saying no mam I can't see the dvd or link to the dvd. ugh. Frustrating. Never had this issue before.

I really enjoyed this book, while participating in an online chat this year. Our focus was to implement the thinking routines in middle/high school class settings. I found myself asking better questions, requiring students to support their caims with evidence, they were more engaged as we looked to find patterns in what we saw. Though some strategies seemed to lend themselves toward history/humanities, many were doable in the math classroom without feeling so contrived.
I plan to reread prior to beginning next school year, just to refresh my own thinking in efforts to give my students more opportunities to make their thinking visible.

I do a home education podcast with a focus on building the intellect instead of just building knowledge content. This book is a phenomenal resource for ideas to approach that style of education. The thinking routines they describe are very useful ways to structure an educational dialogue so as to cover multiple angles and promote deep understanding and connection building in the mind. I definitely recommend it.

Yes to this book!

"Making Thinking Visible" unintentionally answers some of the questions posed by educator and psycholinguist Frank Smith who fretted in 1990 about the then-new bureaucratic craze for "critical thinking."

Written by three education specialists, "Making Thinking Visible" gives practical advice on how one can actually encourage critical thinking on the part of both students and teachers by encouraging imaginative and creative hands-on learning.

Using examples from a variety of both American and European classrooms, "Making Thinking Visible" offers teachers hands-on activities, thought-provoking questions to ask your students, and insights into the use and misuse of these techniques.

This a useful, interesting, and inspiring classroom tool.
