Tess Whitty is an English-Swedish translator and owner of Swedish Translation Services, which provides English-Swedish-English translation, localization, proofreading and editing services. She is an active member of the American Translators Association, Institute of Translation and Interpreting and Swedish Association of Professional Translators. During the past decade Tess has practiced and learned most of what you need to know to market your translation services and build a thriving freelance business. She holds a M.Sc. in Economics, specializing in International Marketing and languages, plus a M.A. in Business Communication and PR and spent many years in IT marketing before shifting to a career in translation. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge and experience in translation and marketing and does this through presentations, webinars, coaching and an award winning podcast called Marketing Tips for Translators. From setting SMART goals to creating your own website, this book offers clear, easy-to-follow recipes for success. Tess Whitty’s writing style is concise and to the point. If you want all the marketing know-how without getting too deep into the marketing lingo, this book is for you. It is a quick read that is divided into sections short enough that you can squeeze them in while waiting for a client’s email reply or taking a brief break from translating. At the end of each chapter, you will find useful resources if you want to dive deeper into the topic that was just discussed.
I highly recommend this book as a valuable reference that you will find yourself going back to time and again.
The main accomplishment of this book, besides the tons of information, tips an some real gems it lavishes on the readers, is how it smoothly drives you to roll up your sleeves and seize your own life, to reassess your own persona. Tess tells you, as if she were talking with a friend over a coffee, that you are far more than a translator; you are your own brand, your own start-up, your soft and hard asset and that you have to see yourself and show yourself to your universe as such. This book is very contemporary, and walks you through a myriad of technological media you can avail yourself of and, more importantly, shows you how to exploit the different platforms.
I am a seasoned translator from Argentina with a fair number of years in this trade, but Tess Whitty managed to open my eyes to the numberless tools I had at my disposal, but I was giving a miss to. What you should not give a miss to is this book. Do yourself a favor, arm yourself with a copy and throw away your old you. Required reading.
In this book, she combines those skills and explores ways in which translators can improve their marketing efforts and ultimately, get more clients! I really liked the tech-approach because it is something that is clearly going to influence the future, but that aside it can certainly help translators get better results right now. Concrete advice on not just how to set up a website, for example, but also on how to check the site speed and make sure there are no broken links. Tess also talks about social media in depth and how translators can use tools such as Facebook and Linkedin to increase their workflows by getting more business.
Now, some of this information might be available elsewhere, but it is so much better to have it tailored to your area of interest, and Tess carefully highlights the specifics that relate to the translations market, including plenty of useful links, and it is exactly those specifics that make this book special.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to everyone working in translations, and especially to those freelancers looking to grow their businesses. It is worth much more than the cover price in terms of the potential business that one could acquire simply by implementing a few of Tess's excellent tips. A fantastic book!
Actually it is helping me clear my mind about what I have done so far and what I am going to do in the future. Also, I loved the author's tone. Tess Whitty has a friendly while professional tone in her book and that will make you really enjoy both reading her book and following her easy-to-follow recipes. If I am asked to count this book's advantages, I would say it is:
- Professional & helpful
- Have brilliant mottos
- Easy-to-follow and hard-to-forget recipes
- A must-read for freelancers (even outside the translation industry)
- A mind clearing business management guide (a clear past will lead to a more clear future)
- and "Different" because of Tess Whitty's expressive tone as the author!
