The story is told in a typical Balzac prose style, a forthright narrative sprinkled with witty adages and life lessons, a swift change in emotions running in his characters such that its difficult to decipher the true nature of each character but only to gratify ones curiosity by admitting that inherent fallacy of human character - its multi-faced nature.
A small read and a part of Balzac's magnum opus The Human Comedy (La Comédie humaine), despite being representative of his style, it is not one of the most fascinating stories of his collection nevertheless a good one to start with if you are starting to read Balzac. If you find it mundane, perhaps the longer stories of Balzac may prove tiresome. If it instigates your interest, buying the complete series of (La Comédie humaine) may not be an overkill.
P.S. - This review is from English Translation from - New York, Reviews of Reviews Co. edition of this book.
I don't like golddigger stories whether male or female, and in this case both parties were out for the money (nor was the story interesting or humorous) so I quit.
